Is Joey Barton a free transfer ?

Newcastle said he could leave for free and then he started playing for Newcastle again. Does anyone know if it's a free transfer ?

If so
A) Newcastle have lost the plot
B) What a gem

I read in the BBC report that he is available for free, and free to talk to whoever but we approached Newcastle to speak to him first out of courtesy.

He has a year left on his contract, but we are discussing taking him for free. We can do this because Newcastle have agreed that he can be released from his contract for free.

However, until contracts are signed Newcastle could change their minds and ask for a fee.

I think we are too far down the line for this to happen, but you never know with Mike Ashley. He might think he is being clever!

All the reports I've read suggest he's a freebie after being released by Newcastle because of his tweets about his club's policies.Even so,if £60k a week is to be believed that equates to over £9m over 3 years.
They're currently talking about Barton and the baggage that comes with him on Talksport.
