Just found this on Carling's official website:

Do you have details of the prize money involved for winning the Carling Cup?

The prize money is awarded by the Football League - The winners of the Carling Cup win £100,000 and the runners-up £50,000. The losing semi-finalists each take home £25,000.

Very little incentive financially for the club to want to complete.

      missing the point sir pie.

There is a difference between playing 2nd string team, which is fine, and wanting to be knocked out, which means deliberatley losing in my world.

Play the reserves or kids is fine - but use it as a chance for them to impress.

And what has the finince got to do with it. We don't enter cometitions just to win prize money. If that was the case we could all go and support some fat lady at the bingo hall.

Agree..the club loves flashing up images of the 67 win and that team are often wheeled out on to the pitch and applauded as heroes..so it does mean something..in terms of history if not finances.

If we are so not bothered why do we enter..are we obliged?

Also why not say look guys don't come..lets play behind closed doors and save everyone the bother!

i think its so unprofessional ..if you are in a competition you should play it to win it!

        call me old fashioned!

I'm not saying what Warnock has said is right just that as a manager he doesn't have to convince the fans to come, encourage new support, decide what the prices should be or anything like that. For him he has to play the match and has to get through it without any injuries. Some played because of the need to get fit whilst others obviously played because there wasn't in his mind the alternatives. You are right that maybe Gibbons and Harriman could have just started but it was pretty much what was expected. The fact that he played Cook and Rowlands was a clear indication to them of exactly where they are in his priorities.

I firmly believe that if there was a financial incentive for the team to win then of course we'd do everything to get through but if the losing semi finalists are picking up just £25,000 that would mean a win last night would have been just a few grand which isn't enough to risk further injuries.

FA Cup 3rd round victory you get about £25k, the same as a semi final appearance in the League Cup.

Warno did say that this team is my back up so we do really need to get 4/5 players in. He was being professional. That game has damaged Orr and put Rowley out the shop window.
