  • Everton Match Report

When anyone looked at the teamsheet an hour before kick off, you'd be mistaken to think we were still in The Championship, with only one new signing, Gabbidon in the starting 11.

After last weeks heavy defeat, you wondered where the next point would come from, no-one expected it to be today. In the last 48 hours several players went down with a stomach bug, including Connolly, Taarabt, Bothroyd and Dj campbell who collapsed on the floor on Friday with stomach cramps. A late decision to play Agyemang this morning was made after it was obvious Dj could not even make the team coach.

One wonders barring injuries whether we would have played 3 men in the centre midfield, but it certainly worked. Faurlin today was back to his best and Taarabt was able to get away with a few of his tricks and Buzsaky whilst giving the ball away a few times, done his best. Everton were not able to get through the midfield and we had a 15 minute spell late in the first half where we looked like an established premiership side. When you get cheers for continuous passing away from home from your own fans, clearly you are doing well. We had to withstand a lot of early pressure and Leighton Baines came closest to scoring, when he hit the crossbar from about 30 yards and Bartley for Everton was getting a lot of possession. They had a great penalty shout mid-way through the first half, when it looked like Gabbidon had pushed Cahill. in the back, after a great cross from the left. The young kid Bartley for Everton was very impressive and only a matter of time before a bigger club come in for him.

Saying all that, I was a proud spectator seeing us compete at the highest level and more than matching there possession.

We scored when we were on top, the movement today was excellent. A good series of one-twos, led to a chance on the edge of the box for Tommy Smith, who slotted low into the left hand corner of the goal. After that goal, every QPR fan could be heard loudly around Goodison Park. The home crowd were stunned into silence and the Everton players seemed shell shocked. We continued to play well and fully deserved to go into half-time 1-0 up. I am sure many QPR fans drinking the half time pint or consuming the half time hot dogs, felt it would be a matter of time before Everton would claw there way back into the game.

I was concerned we might defend too deeply, but in fact we started the second half with a high line and with all the possession. Our passing was excellent and the Everton fans were becoming restless. The Everton fans wanted changes to be made, with an hour Moyles brought on Arteta for the luckless Beckford and soon after Fellaini to try and make a difference. What resulted, was a long ball game which suited us down to the ground. They were humping balls up for the knock downs and we just dealt with the danger, playing the ball calmly out of defence and giving our forward thinking players licence to the attack the flanks.

In truth under Warnock when you are 1-0 up in the last 10 minutes, you tend to think you will hold on, though today we were all a bit nervous. This is the Premiership and it only takes a split second for someone to show a bit of class, though in fairness I can only remember one header from Cahill which was well saved. We were not overawed today and we seem to have learn't our lessons quickly from last week. The fact we played an extra midfielder helped, it would be interesting to see if Warnock follows the trait of playing one up front away from home.

Warnock in his press conference confirmed he is in the hunt for 4-5 players this week and getting all the support he needs from Tony Fernandes. He did mention it was a very hard summer for him, but he is now looking forward to the challenge of working with Tony and Amit.
