  • "Derry hasn't got this legs for the Premier League"

I see this statement a lot but don't understand what its based on. Derry played 45 games last season and was fit all the way through it, he is a professional footballer who trains all the time and as far as I'm aware hasn't had any major injuries in his career (might be wrong there).

Is it because he has grey hair or that he is 33...as I can't really find in solid justification for this statement?

    Couldn't agree more.

The one thing that surprised me most about him last season was his pace and sharpness over 10 yards. Didn't look like a "carthorse" to me.
    Passing was very accurate too.

And that's before you get to his leadership, influence and attitude.

Derry is fine. It's just because he's got grey hair and i'm not even joking, that's peoples real reason
        Under Les Ferdinand:
Luke Freeman, top assists in the league: 4million
Alex Smithies, great goalie for this club: 3,5million
Charlie Austin, 19 Premier League goals: 4million
Jack Robinson: Contract ran out, left for free
        And many more mistakes

LES FERDINAND, IT'S TIME TO GO

          I think he's fully capable.

He's not a box to box player, or even a player that pushes on he sits in front of the back four for protection & breaks play up & feeds the mids / forwards with simple balls.

Stating the obvious yes but point being he's not a player that needs to run his nuts off but just do the things he's good at & he'll / we'll be OK.

I'd say people make a snap judgement about Derry just from his appearance. IMO he was the most consistent performer behind Paddy last season. I think he'll suprise a few pundits and fans alike this year.

Quite often this time last year it was from Palace fans. I think it's based on sour grapes and jealousy. Something similar happened with Clint Hill.

Must be some amazing transformation that takes place when you leave that part of the world.

Totally agree, at times he looked like one of our fittest players last season, Derry has never been a box to box midfielder so I don't understand what people's angle is with this statement

I seriously think this is case, I know it sounds daft but I really think it comes back to something this trivial at times

The Palace fans said he wouldn't last the season for us last year ! How wrong they were !!

Best player we have for retaining posession easily. Plays it short and at the right time. He's going to get a few cards tho, studs up, trailing leg etc.

Bang on mate. He looked more than fit enough last year, his game isnt based on speed, hes a "mucky" player that breaks up play, the sort of player we really need in the PL. Yes, there will be games (ie Man City) when players like Silva and Nasri run rings around him, but thats got to be expected as in this league there are teams that are streets ahead of us quality wise.

I think in the nitty gritty games that count (ie against Blackburn, Swansea, Wigan, Norwich) he will be vital for us, as he was all of last year.

Let's wait and see. I can see either scenario unfolding. In fact against the better sides he will probably struggle because of the speed on the game. Against Bolton tomorrow he should be ok.
