  • Our squad and where we need to strengthen

It seems different people want different areas of our squad strengthening. I think in the prem with only 25 players, each position needs 2 good players throughout the team. Our 3 extra players this season will be in goal and up front as we usually only play 1 up front. So who do we have in each position at the moment and where do we need strengthening? This is going on each players usual position.

Goal - Kenny, Murphy, Cerny - doesn't need strengthening
Right back - Orr - Dyer may fill in but definitely need another right back
Left Back - Hill - Connolly can fill in but definitely need another left back
Centre back - Hall, Gabbidon, Gorks, Connolly, Shittu - over subscribed if you ask me. All good players on their day though hall, gabbidon and connolly can fill in, in other positions.
Centre mid - Faurlin, Derry, Buz, Vaagen Moen - personally thought buz did well when replacing faurlin last year and Moen is an unknown. believe we need another derry.
Attacking three - Taarabt, Smith, Dyer, Mackie, Ephraim - buz can play here as well which means the quota is full but maybe one more???
Strikers - DJ, Boothroyd, Helguson, Agyemang - very happy with the first three and agyemang will only be used as an impact sub.

In my view this means the squad needs 3-4 players. One right back, one left back, a defensive midfielder and maybe a winger.

I think we need a quality and proven centre back plus a quality left back. I could live with MC at RB.

It has taken us so long to get back we must stay up.

"In my view this means the squad needs 3-4 players. One right back, one left back, a defensive midfielder and maybe a winger"

          Now then, my question:

Who would you, realistically, like to fill these positions before transfer window closes?

          My answers:

          No change in ownership/transfer funds:
          Right back: Would play Dyer.
          Left Back: Bertrand (loan).
          Def Mid: Bullard (loan).
Winger: Would say puncheon but cant even afford that, so will have to pass on my own question!.

Rumours (although very unlikely) of a £10mill kitty after takeover:
Right back: James Tomkins (approx £5mill?).
          Left Back: Bertrand (loan).
Def Mid: Jenas (approx £5mill? Really cant see him having a sniff this year at Spurs).
Winger: Would say (for discussion purposes only obviously as this scenario is 99% not going to happen) that IF the "£10mill transfer kitty" was to emerge, the above 2 PL proven buys plus quality young left back on loan, would be a wise way to spend it. IMO, having Dyer, Smith and DJ as options is enough on the wing.

A good asessment of our squad, but as I see it,too many of our CB´s appears a bit too clumpsy to me. Theseaon hasent started yet so we´ll see how they cope(with support from Derry and Faurlin).

But one thing is for sure; we have to keep it tight all over the park when we face United-Arsenal-Chelsea-Tottenham etc. etc. on the break this season. One last point from me; Our striker(s) indeed has to act first defender when we have lost the ball upfront, our wingers as well.

            Anyway,roll on Bolton!!

Good Post Joody. Considering how much we have spent I think Neil has done well. I still question the quality of the new players in defence and midfield so I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Not convinced yet with Gabbidon, I maybe would have preferred Upson or Woodgate, but lets give him a chance. My starting CB's would be Hall and Conners, with Gabbidon and Gorks as cover, but not all will agree.

Everyone thinks Orr and Hill will struggle, but I'm not as worried as others. Clint lacks pace but makes up for it with how he reads the game. Clever player who I think improved during last season. Orr will be compared with Walker which is unfair. He doesn't get forward as much, but is young enough to gain more experience and improve. Obviously I would prefer better at FB if funds allowed, or if we get Bertrand and Walker on loan, but it's unlikely, but maybe we'll be OK.
With Derry and Faurlin as defensive midfield, I personally think they are both competing for this position with Dyer, which is healthy. Dyer may also be useful at RB, but he may be wasted here if fit as I see him more as a midfield playmaker/passer.

I'm really worried about Tarbs. He could be a revelation or a complete flop, we don't know. He will be targeted as our most dangerous player and get kicked about and I worry how he might react. Also, to expect too much from him will be pressure he may not cope with. I like the idea of experienced Dyer behind him in support.

Has Hizlesberger signed for Wolves? He could be useful. And what about Jenas on Loan?

wouldnt consider buz or moen as adequate replacements for faurlin or derry. both for me would be in the attacking three. we need bullard + a derry cover. throw in dyer and we have CM sorted. aside that just two loan fullbacks with pace and if possible a commanding CB with prem experience to partner hall.

For me, we really need two new prem quality wing backs... Quick wing backs that is!!

To be pushy, we could do with a stronger DM and to be honest Bullard would be ideal for me and could do the job!

If we have money available later on, I would spend it on a centre back.. Our current CB are still average IMO

Great sum-up Jody, but i think that we'll bring in approximately 2 players even less then that.
