Richard Eckersley is a versatile defender.
The Salford born and bred full-back is predominantly a right-sided player but is also comfortable at left-back.
Injuries limited his chances in the Academy Under-18s in 2005/06 when he made just three league appearances for the young Reds side.
However, Eckersley had progressed so well by 2007/08 that he was shortlisted for the Denzil Haroun Reserve Player of the Year award. Tom Cleverley and Sam Hewson were also nominated by Reserves coach Brian McClair.
Eckersley continued to impress
in the reserve team during the following season. He also made his senior debut during 2008/09, as a second-half substitute for Fabio in the FA Cup victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford.
