  • Cesena game

It's just a pre season game and all the rest of it but as we are only 2 weeks from kick off think it's of relevance.

Cesena are what a Wigan or a Blackburn equivalent? Over 90 mins I would say we were evenly matched. Bothroyd should have had a penalty first half & Kenny saved our bacon one on one.

It amazed me how from two corners in succession we allowed them to take short corners with only one QPR player anywhere near the ball....

Derry looked poor IMO, Faurlin started badly giving needless balls away but improved and Taarabt looked poor. I thought Gabbidon, Hall, Kenny, Bothroyd all looked good. I can't recall Ephraim touching the ball....

Our full backs weren't tested against real pace and I thought if any Hill was outpaced a couple of times whilst Orr wasn't troubled.

My personal opinion is DJ, competition for Derry and a pacey Fb is vital to our survival.

    Nothing new there then!

Without Routs woefully short of pace in the team.

Hogan touched the ball about 6 times and gave it away 5
2 of them were aimless headers in the middle of the park

Didnt see the game Rich but i think this is bang on. I love Derry and think he was superb last year and does deserve a crack at the PL, but i do think we need somebody there incae he really is out of his depth.

Fullback i think is essential, we really will get caught out alot by most teams quick wingers. Gutted about missing out on Naughton he would have been ideal. And DJ is a goalscorer proven last year in the PL and that is essential.
You should never underestimate the predictability of stupidity.

Adel was short of fitness. Ephraim was poor. Kenny was top class as usual. Gabbidon bossed the defence well.

thought Gabbidon was woeful and a liability more than anything.

Kenny- his usual self. Top noch, what a keeper that man is, and so on......,lol.
              Gabbidon-Very good second half.
Hall- seemed very reassuring on the ball.
Hill- Slow and to easy to turn.
Gorkks- Not enough time on the pich to judge really. Not that much tested , but I would
like to give him a chance alongside Gabbidon or Hall IF we keep in the squad at all. I hope we will. Who knows; maybe he is one of the players who will held his own this season. After all he is a fighter.
Derry- I have seen him play a lot better. His performance left me with a big question mark; can he reallly hack it in the prem?
Faurlin- Quality. But at times I would have liked him to cross the ball a bit more. His passing was at times woefull.
Hogan- Not a good performance. He is better than that, but like the rest of the team, he looked a bit off the pace. He is not the player I would use against a wellorganized Italian team. For me he is more a player who has to chase the ball when we intend to kill a team off on the break. It would still be interesting to follow him in prem. IF he will get the chance.
Matt Connolly- Was he on the pitch?
Tommy Smith- Couldnt see the first 16 minutes yesterday, but he was quite lively from then on. A useful workhorse. I can see him get a good few of matches this season. He is good passer of the ball, and a link up player as well.
Jay bootroyd- Looked like a good signing, should have got a penalty. Never afraid to make a challenge. Personally I would like us to play Dj on top alongside him. Cambell often drifts from left to right up front but as I said I would like to see him as a second striker in combination with Bootroyd.
Adel- Seemed not quite up for it on the occasion. But that´s good. Adel is ours, hehe.
Petter Vaagan Moen- looked very lively when he came on. Seems to be in good shape already, and one of the few in our team who fired a shot on goal(not well placed but it´s a start.) I was also impressed with how clevery he passed the ball. From a norwegian to another; Thumbs up, Petter. Well done.
Dyer:seems to be a good player. Delicate moves and good passer of the ball. An important player you have to got in your team when you are trying to soften an established defence.
I would like to think he is very usefull on the break as well. PS.I havnt seen this player before.Hence this is only my first impression of the player.
Buzz- same as Petter and Dyer,But I do also have to say he looked very athletic on the evening.
Agyemang- I didnt see so much of him. But as we know, he "can" be a handful against tired and slow defenders. It wasnt him who was involved in our last minute attempt on goal, was it?

Many heavy legs out there ofcourse. From now on most of the players have to work on that problem. It´s only a natural part of a preseaon preparations.

One thing to bear in mind with friendlies is that there will have been no scouting done on the opposition beforehand, and with all the substitutions it's a very disjointed affair. We were also away from home.

Plus, with the manager trying out different things, of course some players won't be at their best. That's the point of experimentation - the manager can see what works and what doesn't.

Finally, I doubt very much that all those that featured will be in our first choice 18 matchday squad.

                Relax!

                    Shania,

A fair assessment. Except for Hogan, he was there to run around as to what appeared to be a headless chicken in order to stop the Italians playing the Italian way which would be to pass and play around the team. He pressed the ball and got there more often than Derry The team play is lob sided with much of the play up through Smith who worked hard up and down and played well. However on the left we are weak because some peoples saviour does not track up and down or hug and get chalk on his boots (altough it is not how he likes to play out wide nor is he suited for it) and for that reason Hill was exposed too often. Must LB's would be in trouble for the same reason. Hard really to assess cameo subs, team stucture and hence play went to pot when the changes came, although PVM seemed to have something to offer if he can build up his core and upper body strength.

The dazzle I think has gone and sent too much of the game picking the ball up on the 18 yard line, not going to dazzle or hurt teams from there. If he has the hunger and pace from a standing start he needs to be nearer the the other 18 yard box which he did once last night and was a threat when it happened.

I know where you're coming from but the starting 11 imo was Warnocks best available in WARNOCK's opinion. I would disagree with Hogan and would much prefer to see Mackie or Routledge back with Smith or DJ on the left. I wasn't sure about the trialist, Perone, either. So probably 9 of the starting 11will start vs Bolton I reckon.

I thought the 1st half was 50 / 50 but the second half at times we kept possesion well and were the better team but the differance was last year when we were on top we scored last night we didnt.

I though Dyer looked very good as well as Jay. Buzz opened them up with a wonderful chip and looked to get involved and Gabbidon got better and better as the game went on.

All in all I was happy with the performance as it showed a lot of promise.

Interesting. I didn't think Derry looked poor at all - he was, as far as I was concerned, his usual self, doing the stuff (well) he normally does.
