  • Lets's be fair to Bernie!

There is a lot of anti owner sentiments on the various QPR message boards. As much as I think Briatore is a *****, I think fans continue to a bit unfair towards Bernie.

We were crying to get an owner the calibre of Bernie when we were skint. We were well aware that Bernie was a shrewd businessman, tight with his money and completely unsentimental. He is doing nothing to gain popularity, he just goes about his business quitely, where making money is the only thing that matters. I think we have got nothing else that what we could expect. Like most investors he is here for the money, and that is a legitimate reason for an investor. It should come as no surprise that he sets ticket prices in order to maximize revenues, even though we strongly dislike it.

If I understand the figures correctly the owners had lent the club £33m by end of the 2009/2010 season. Add another £10-15m cash deficit financed by the owners last season, plus £10m promotion bonuses and it probably adds up to a cash injection of £55-60 by now, plus the £14m initial investment, totally £70-75m. To me this is speaking volumes of owners with ambitions and willingness to invest and back the manager. They don't do it to be nice of course, but to earn money, but it is completely unfair to claim they don't back Warnock or show lack of commitment to QPR. The vast amount is funded by Bernie as Mittal has been reluctant to provide financing as I understand it (which is logical, given the dispute over ownership). Briatore has provided his part (50% of the £10m loan linked to the stadium I understand), but because of his small ownership share probaby much less than Bernie.

I think there is little perspective for the owners to get much back from the first season in the Premiership - maximum £5-10m at best. Yes, we get TV money of close to £40m and probably another £10m in increased revenue due to higher ticket prices and better sponsorship deals, but wages are also going up astronomically. I suppose the present squad will earn at least £10m more now we are in the Premiership (salary increases linked to existing contracts), we will probably spend £10m on signing new players and new players are supposed to cost £1.5-2m per year in salary, so with five-six of these it's another £10m. All in all break-even or a tiny profit.

I don't think we can ask for much more from Bernie and the owners than to keep providing reasonable funds for signing a handfull of new players for transfer fees and salary levels matching the size of our club. I have no problem to accept that a club should operate within its own means, and having owners that have provided solid funding over three years I will not blame them if they now expect us to operate inside the revenues we generate from being in the Premier League. Clubs like WBA, Stoke etc have done so.

Blackpool had a wage cap of only 10k a week last year (and did very well despite being relegated), and if we have offered Bothroyd 25k a week plus 2.5k per match plus 250k on top per season, this equals more than 30k a week on average, telling we we are quite ambitious, given our size.

So lets give Bernie a break and remind ourselves he has done nothing more or nothing less than we could expect when he came. Most importantly his money has given us Premier League football. I think the coming season will give us plenty to cheer for, even though it will be bloody hard to avoid relegation, I have no illusions about that.

I agree Oslo, also this forum is relatively militant but even here posters have stated s/t prices were ok and was a big roll call of members getting s/t. Also some posters like the new badge. I say these examples as if fans are finding these changes acceptable then the club cannot be so out on a limb that what they are doing is destroying the club as some have claimed.

The type of fierce reaction in some quarters to tango and cash has been on par with the News of the world. With some posters getting off on us being bookies favourite to go down. I know the old story about crying wolf but posters last season doubted we would get promoted (we did), doubted NWs tactics up to April (he was correct), thought we would get docked 25 pts (didn't happen) and now expect us all to to believe the club is doomed to hell and non believers are mugs or sheep.

These merchants of doom expect us to tear up our s/t and watch the game on sky in the pub as a protest, I think I'll
prefer to give my cash to tango than the ginger *itch of wapping.

The current moan is signings, the doom mongers take the pi+* out of Adel even though he's the best player we have
had for over 15 yrs. The fans who talk about loyalty and having the best interest of the club at heart were round the witches cauldron offering him for sale for a poultry figure of £10m.

When we got promoted we had posts of moving to a 50k stadium and we should go for a european place, not surprising that with some fans harbouring such lofty ambitions that they feel a sense of grievance now.

I accept the club have done wrong, lack of parade, ticket prices, GP but parade isn't a deal breaker, ticket prices was a
disaster but the club probably thought f+c@ it last year top of the league and average gate of approx 15600 (15th in the league). With such figures the club probably thought the hike was necessary resulting in some fans being priced out. Some fans are outraged but others don't think the hike was too bad.

My concern is whether the clubs fan base has diminished caused in part by being out of the top flight for so long and also geography with fans moving away from west London and not being replenished for a variety of reasons. I agree
price is a factor for why fans stay away but I think it's one of a number. Fans weren't moaning about prices for the Leeds game and many were actually having a go at s/t holders for being greedy in getting extra tickets but won't themselves commit to a s/t for a variety of reasons(travel, work, family). What can the club do about that?

On the GP point, NW appears to get on with him.

I accept the owners are annoying but do they need to be vilified to such a level, I think not. Man u, arsenal, villa,
newcastle, just a few clubs who have annoying owners but that appears to be life in football. The way t and c see it is that we wanted premiership football and they've delivered it, convincingly even though many thought it would not happen in the forseeable future.

My boss is a Cardiff fan and he's almost on suicide watch, he told me someone he knows renewed his ticket at Cardiff for
a grand just before the Middlesbrough fiasco, funny but that's when you do have to think it's time to burn your bras and join the revolution, I don't think we're quite there yet.

where does this £14 million initial investment come from? They got the club for nothing aside from a deferred payment to caliendo which they are trying to get out of. As I understand things there has been huge amounts of loans, much to pay off managers and wasted salaries on crap players on long contracts and fines to pay for inept decisions by gp. Debt has trebled and we no longer own our ground. We got lucky getting promoted down to warnock. Sorry don't buy into this at all.

You don't win the hardest league in Europe (on the basis of so many evenly matched sides) over 46 games by luck !!!!!!

Do you really think they got the club for nothing

Yes they have been increasing the debt by putting in their money .

What do you think every other club does ....it's the way of the world in football.

Were you happier in the league one when we were in admin with f all players and having to do collections with buckets !!!!
