Some have already starting debating the home grown rule but for those who haven't or have not even heard of it here is the new ruling which comes into play next season and affects all football league teams:
"At least four of the 16* players in match day squads will have had to have been registered domestically for a minimum of three seasons before their 21st birthday. Nationality is no barrier and the club where they have spent their three seasons is not an issue."
*Now 18 players
The football league have yet to update the rule to incorporate the two extra subs now allowed. It is not clear if the number of home grown players will stay the same or will increase.
Although some listed below are rumoured to be leaving and we may sign some new additions who meet the new ruling if the squad was to stay exactly the same? What does this mean for QPR? Who in our squad does meet this criteria and who doesn't? Will this affect who is picked and who isn't?
Who counts as "home grown" in our squad?
Lee Camp - Signed at 18 for Derby County
Gavin Mahon - Signed at 18 for Wolves
Fitz Hall - Signed at 17 for West Ham
Mikele Leigertwood - Came through Wimbledon's academy
Wayne Routledge - Came through Crystal Palace's academy
Rowan Vine - Signed for Portsmouth at 18
Dexter Blackstock - Signed for Oxford United at 16
Patrick Agyemang - Signed for Wimbledon at 18
Martin Rowlands - Signed for Farnborough at 18
Peter Ramage - Signed for Newcastle at 13
Matthew Connolly - Signed for Arsenal at 18
Lee Cook - Signed for Watford at 17
Hogan Ephraim - Signed for West Ham at 16
Gareth Ainsworth - Signed for Blackburn at 16
Gary Borrowdale - Signed for Crystal Palace at 17
Who doesn't?
Damien Delaney - Signed at 19 for Leicester City so only had 2 seasons in England before 21st.
Damion Stewart - Signed for Bradford at 25 previously played in Jamaica with Harbour View
Akos Buzsaky - First English team (Plymouth) at 23
Kaspars Gorkss - First English team (Blackpool) at 26
Angelo Balanta - Only 18 and has not been registered for three years
Jordi Lopez - First English team (QPR) at 28
Matteo Alberti - Only 20 and has not been registered for three years
Radek Cerny - First English team (Tottenham) at 31
Heidar Helguson - First English team (Watford) at 22
Joe Oastler - Only 18 and has not been registered for three years
Romone Rose - Only 19 and has not been registered for three years
We currently have 15 who meet the criteria so if the squad was to stay exactly the same we wouldn't have a problem selecting four in the match day squad. However with Camp and Blackstock looking likely to leave that reduces the number to 13. Would Borrowdale or Ainsworth even make the bench? Will Hall, Mahon and Leigertwood still be here in August? I think we can easily meet the criteria but we may need to bring in a couple of players who also qualify so we aren't left selecting home grown over form.
So next time you write your starting XI for next season make sure you include at least 4 of the above.
