      Steve Palmer.

Either great minds thinking at the same time or there's an echo somewhere.

Too young to rememeber anything in too much detail before about 1999 so am limited, but from my memory I also though that Matthew Rose was a pretty steady player for us. Never was amazing but was a consistent performer that slotted into a few different positions, never really got much credit.

Good shout...great player and probably the best left back never to play for England.

You must be having a laugh Matty!!

He was a liability...very inconsistent. Don't get me wrong, he had some good games but he had a hell of a lot of poor games.

In his last season or two with us I thought he was pretty steady (certainly compared to some of the dross around him). He suffered in the early days for being a Houston signing from Arsenal, and being played out of position at right back (which I grant you he was woeful at - you'd have though Houston would have known that before he bought him). At CB, Sweeper or DM he was decent though.

My non-controversial vote goes to David Bardsley. Not necessarily underrated by us, but certainly by the rest of the country. One England cap was criminal, but he was unlucky with injury (came off 10 mins into his debut for England if memory serves).

My massively controversial one is Mike Sheron. I watched hime closely in his first season with us, and his movement and link-up play seemed to be one step ahead of those around him. He was often getting into great positions and the ball didn't arrive, or playing through balls that nobody ran on to. By the end of that season his confidence was totally shot. A few more intelligent players around him and we may have seen a different player.

Totally agree! although he got slated, i genuinaly think he was just too good for us. He was looking for the sort of passes and movements to be made that our players at the time simply werent capable of making.

Danny Maddix for me. Top, top player. Consistent and reliable.

Most over-rated David Bardsley. Poseur of the highest order. Always did the same thing when he got the ball and was very predictable.

Mate, can you imagine them 2 (plus faurlin and Routs thrown into the attack) going forward against Sheff Utd? Would have been brilliant to watch!
