  • Cms bid

From The local paper (Peterborough Evening Telegraph)

The race for the signature of Peterborough United striker Craig Mackail-Smith is hotting up.

Posh have now accepted bids believed to be in the region of £3 million from three clubs for the 27 year-old. Mackail-Smith is scheduled to hold talks with two Premier League clubs and a Championship side this week.

Posh Director of Football Barry Fry declined to name the clubs involved, but Mackail-Smith was linked with Premier League side Stoke in a national newspaper yesterday (12 June).

Fry said: “Craig is wanted by a lot of clubs and we have given him permission to talk with three of them this week.

“He is scheduled to meet them with his agent and then it will be down to him, but he is in no rush and I wouldn’t be surprised to see other clubs show an interest soon.

“Personally I wouldn’t mind seeing Craig in our side at the start of the season. We could still sell him before the end of the August transfer deadline, but it really is down to Craig what he does.

“He may get a fabulous offer from the first club he sees and decide to move there, but I’d be surprised if anything happens before the weekend.”

Mackail-Smith is an unlikely target for Stoke who normally pursue well-built, powerful strikers. Wigan, Everton and QPR have all been linked with a player who bagged 35 goals as Posh charged to promotion from League One.

Meanwhile Fry returned from the Football League chairmen’s conference over the weekend in Cyprus in a frustrated mood.

Posh have seen five bids for new players rejected, including offers of £600,000 and £500,000 respectively for MK Dons striker Sam Baldock and Bournemouth centre-back Jason Pearce. Posh have also failed so far to land Dagenham & Redbridge winger Danny Green.

Fry added: “It was all doom and gloom in Cyprus as only the big clubs appear to have any money. Clubs are cutting squads as there are big financial changes ahead in a year when television money drops by 26 per cent and there are question marks over the solidarity payments from the Premier League.

“Which all makes the fact that our bids have been rejected rather surprising, including a couple for players we haven’t named yet.

“But there is still plenty of time and we will keep going.”

Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony has been tweeting his frustration at the lack of progress in building a squad competitive enough for the Championship

I hope we don't get him to be honest.

Just another Jamie mackie, who has scored at league 1 level. Decent for the championship imo.
I played sunday league football today.

Clearly I was the best player on the pitch.

I scored 5 and made 7 last ditch tackles.

We lost 5-0 but the rest of my team were sh it!

I think he'd be well worth a punt. £3m would not be the price up front.
        Add ons etc.
The bloke has what not many players have - an abilty to stick a football between two white posts. A radar for the goal.
        And a fantastic work attitude.

35 goals in a season is not something to be written off, just because they were scored at League One level. He didn't take penalties either.

Just my opinion, but there is a bit too much snobbery these days from "Prem Fans" about players from other leagues.

No snobbery from me just the fact that he has a very poor 1st touch.

You can't afford to have a dreadful 1st touch at this level.

I don't rate him as much as Beckford Paulie

I dont think CMS is bad player and maybe he is worth a go! I believe he would give eveything to the cause and would be desperate to prove himself.

I do question 3 million punds for him though. 1.5 mill plus add ons for success.

What i struggle to understand is if we are preopared to pay 3 million for a striker then why are we not in for maynard.

Atleast maynards proven at championship level. He was the top scorer the year before and after his injury this year weith his goals really chaned bristol citys season around fro them.

Hes young has pace and a very tidy finisher. He must be a prioirty for us.

I've seen him a few times live.
I honestly don't think he has a poor 1st touch.

He may not be Robin van Persie, but Rangers have always (or used to) buy just the kind of player like CMS down the years. The Sintons, Sinclairs, Massons etc..

                Each to their own though.

We will need to take a bit of a gamble as we have seen what the established Prem strikers go for. Realistically we are not going to pay those sums of money.

£3m seems a tad too much for a player who was in L1 but I think he could be a hit under Warnock.

i still think there is a long way to go before we need to get worried. still lots of quality players at relegated clubs/out of contract etc.

id rather we didnt sign CMS for 3m.. but wouldnt mind signing him 1.5-2m

Well it was until May, because now he is a seemingly unwanted and very expensive overhead in a Championship side
