  • BBC TV Centre

The BBC today announced that they had begun the ‘first phase’ in the sale of Television Centre in White City, London.

They’ve hired property consultants Lambert Smith Hampton (LSH) to investigate either selling the iconic HQ outright, or “alternative proposals possibly based around a joint venture partnership".

Either way, the corporation wants to “maximise the value” of the site, and get the best deal for licence fee payers.

It was announced back in 2007 that Television Centre was being put on the market. Thousands of staff will move to their new Media City centre in Salford, Manchester, with others relocating to Broadcasting House in London.

The BBC plans to move all the staff out by 2015 and have set a deadline of 1 July this year for interested parties to register their interest in the site

I still think this site could prove too costly..pay for the site itself, pay for the demolition and contruction..plus,looking at the site on google earth,i'm not convinced you could fit a stadium in the footprint of the site..its an awkward shape..any thoughts?

Really it is a listed building, would make a very interesting stadium design....

Oh, and this was on that site that is dying 2 hours ago. Keep up James....

I never knew that. Maybe they'll make it into a 'QPR Village' and use it as a hotel on the side of the stadium?

Of course I'm only joking. Is there no way around a grade 2 listed building? I have no idea how these things work.

In February 2008 (with a subsequent amendment in that November) English Heritage requested listed status for the Television Centre's scenery workshop, the canteen block adjoining the Blue Peter garden, and the central building.[15] Previously, under a long standing deal between the BBC and English Heritage the building was not listed, to allow the BBC to make regular changes that are necessary in a broadcasting centre.[citation needed] In return, if the Corporation ever left TV Centre, it agreed that the fabric of the building would be restored to its mid-60s state, and English Heritage would then list notable features.[16] On 17 June 2009 the Department for Culture, Media and Sport decided to list at Grade II the Central Ring of the building and Studio 1, noting in particular the John Piper mosaic, central drum with its mosaic tiles, the Huxley-Jones gilded statue of Helios, full-height glazing of the stair and original clock in the Central Ring.[citation needed] The 'atomic dots' and name of Studio 1, along with the cantilevered porch on its exterior were noted as important architectural features of that building.[citation needed] The Department did not consider the other buildings, including all other studios, scenery block and canteen of sufficient special interest to warrant listing them, and specifically excluded them.[2][17]

Very unlikely they would let even Bernie knock it down....

As it was described by the previous government : "Making the protection announcement in July 2009, the Government's architecture minister Barbara Follett noted that it was where Doctor Who, Fawlty Towers and Blue Peter first came to life. "It has been a torture chamber for politicians, and an endless source of first-class entertainment for the nation—sometimes both at the same time."

          So probably no chance.

Bloody government no mention of the Blue Peter Garden and Sir Les..........

the listing at English Heritage for BBC TV Centre..i would say that knocking it down is not an option, which limits the chances of the Beeb selling i would have thought

The main building, the 'concrete doughnut', is the only part of the site listed as far as I know.

well the centre ring is listed, plus the scenery block and canteen(located more the rear of the building)that only leaves the East Tower(the tall concret tower block, next to the railway line))plus Stage 5 and 6,which are the newest additions, that sit on Wood Lane, more or less opposite the Tube Station, thats nowhere near enough room to build a stadium on,the Centre ring's lisitng alone makes it impossible

Some have been calling for that for a long time. It is the only reasonable site in the locality.
