Found this today in my local newpaper and was wondering if this was anywhere near our situation?
ARLESEY Town’s trip to Hitchin on Bank Holiday Monday will be a championship decider after all after the Blues were deducted nine league points.
In an astonishing turn of events just days after sealing what they thought was a championship-winning victory at AFC Hayes last Tuesday, Arlesey were informed by the Zamaretto League that they were to lose nine points after fielding an ineligible player in three games during the season.
Ironically, Arlesey were given a boost in their promotion hunt earlier this month when title rivals Daventry Town also had points taken away under similar circumstances.
The nine point deduction sees Arlesey drop to second place in Division One Central, two behind Hitchin Town with both sides set to meet on Monday for a crunch 3pm kick-off at Top Field which is also the last league game of the season.
Arlesey chairman Manny Cohen released the following statement, saying the decision was a blow to the whole town and saying the league’s decision was ‘extremely harsh’.
“Arlesey Town Football Club has just had nine points deducted by the league for fielding an ineligible player due to what was a technicality.
“We feel the league has been extremely harsh and that the penalty does not fit the crime.
“We put a great case forward which appeared, in our view, to have been completely discounted. We have had a fantastic 120th year, filled with great results and as far as we are concerned, Gary King (director of football/manager), Zeema Abbey (assistant manager), Derek Brown (captain) and the whole team have won the league fair and square.
“They have given us a year of entertainment and skill that has been second to none. They have brought something special back into our club, they have put the dreams back into our community.
“Arlesey are one of the few clubs left in the leagues that are owned not by a company or individual, but by the community; which is amazing after 120 years.
“We have two men’s teams, two ladies teams, 10 youth teams and two disability teams, this episode is a massive and we feel unnecessary blow to our whole community.
“We all now look to our amazing first team and hope they can dig deep and find the mental and physical resource, to get over this devastating news and prove again to all, what a great team they are.”
