  • Our squad for next season...

Right looking for a serious debate here. I don't for minute think we have a squad at the minute that will survive next season and anyone who thinks differently needs their head tested.

After last night performance and watching for 95% of our games this season home and away, I think it is safe to say we need at least 7 very good players to make a team up fit to keep us in the Premiership. The only players in my eyes who will cut it are as follows:

Kenny - No.1 on my team sheet and probably our best signing in the last 10-12years. Probably one of the best keepers in the country at the minute and proved that last night. Forgiven for his perfomance against Scunthorpe.

Taarabt - Spat the dummy out again last night but I think he was more disappointed in his performance rather than that was a reaction to NW taking him off. Be interesting to see how he copes with the step up, but we rely on him far too much.

Derry - Deserves another chance, although never had the best of games last night, I still think he's good enough.

Faurlin - One of his worse games last night, but still think he's good enough.

Smith - Has the ability just hope he still has the legs next season.

Mackie - His workrate is top draw therefore he should be able to make the step up, just worried if he can find that same application he had before the leg break.

Buzz - Big season for him coming up, could he handle it? If he can string some games together and find his old form then I think the Premiership will suit his game style.

    BIG MAYBE's

    Connolly
    - At the minute he's a fringe 1st team player for the Premiership, needs to get his head sorted out but I think he could be a good player in the future.

Gorkks - Another fringe 1st team player for the Premiership, but only because I rate him better than Evatt at Blackpool and he has sort of coped.

This is not a knee jerk reaction to last nights result. I've come to this conclusion over watching us over a number of games. I don't buy Pete's comments about their is not much of a step up from the Championship to the Premiership and still think its a big leap!

Buzz can't even get in our team.
First game: Arsenal vs Queen's Park Rangers at Highbury, Saturday 17th November 1984.

Agree but that's because the way we have set up. Pre season he looked lean, very sharp and Warnock has said many a times he never thought Derry would play 20 games this season. It's the early injury that had ruined his season and Derry has taken his chance and been immense. How could you drop him for Buzz the way he's played?

Yes Dazzer... Buzz is not a decent player anymore...

        For me:

        Make step up:

        Kenny, Faurlin, Smith, Helgs, Adel

        Maybe's:

Derry ( Deserves a shot though)
        Hill - as above
Connelly - if he learns to defend
Gorks - Pace could be an issue

        Mackie - as you said.

We need at least 5 decent 1st team signings.

          I've said it before.
          To survive we need fullbacks
and we need another guy alongside
HH. That is it. ok, get a younger derry, too.
but that's all, 4 players. only my opinion.

And another striker in reserve -- it's what we've been crying out for for many years anyway
Perhaps another centre back although (and some will no doubt laugh) Ramage, who looks a darn sight better at CB than FB, will be fit too.
Faurlin is my hero!!! Love him!!! #########

              7??
Not sure we're that far off, both fullback slots will need changing and a front man will be bought in, maybe keep Routledge or bring in another wide man and thats it..
              Walker on loan
              Warnock left back
              Routledge loan
              Graham striker
Tompkins centre back, that would strengthen the squad nicely.

Good post Dazzer. The worrying thought I had reading through your list of players who you thought would make the step up is question marks kept springing into my mind (Derry? Smith?). On the positive I would add Routledge (I know technically not ours) and I think Helgs, Gorks, Connolly and Hall are at least v good people to have in the squad.

But your basic point I agree with. Pete was asking slightly dismissively if West Ham had anyone who cd do a job for us but I was watching their game on MoTD and they had Cole and Keane up front - that's a different league from Helgs and Hulse, yet West Ham now look as if they cd get relegated. The Premier League is a massive step up and my fear is the board will look at what Warnock has achieved in the Championship and expect him to work similar miracles in the Premiership, but I'm not convinced there are so many Premiership players available at bargain fees, particularly young, mobile strikers with a good hit rate.

This is the salient point. If there are ever any young mobile strikers, they get hoovered up by bigger clubs than us.

Clubs like Bolton, Fulham, Wigan and Stoke have in recent years of mish mashing PL proven players on the way down, with imported signings or kids on loan from the big 6 clubs that don't cost the earth. I'm thinking the likes of Elmander/Davies/Sturridge - Rodallega/Heskey/DiSanto - Johnson/Kamara/Dempsey.

                  Only way forward for us.

Someone mentioned Crouch on another thread. Just pie in the sky.

And Mackie as a PL player?? Great guy, fantastic work ethic and team spirit but way, way short of being anywhere near PL standard.

What marquee signings? I mentioned "if" in another thread around Robbie Keane. And even so, a player "like" Crouch on £70k + a week with 2 years left on his current deal with a manager who treats him like his son just isn't worth wasting breath on.

Players "like" Mutu and Del Piero would be far more likely to encompass the "marquee" signing. Big wages but no transfer fees and provide huge commercial potential.

Del Piero is he still playing?

Totally agree regarding Mackie but I have been saying this for months Nodge and been given plenty of stick, although I never questioned his work rate and attitude as its superb.
I played sunday league football today.

Clearly I was the best player on the pitch.

I scored 5 and made 7 last ditch tackles.

We lost 5-0 but the rest of my team were sh it!

Agree with all of that. Fear there are going to be some disappointed bunnies in the close season when Crouchy and Drogba don't turn up for training...
