Shaun Derry says Neil Warnock's insistence that his team play with a smile on their face has helped Rangers produce such consistent football this season.

The R's opened up a 13 point gap on third-placed Cardiff City with last night's 3-0 win over Sheffield United at Loftus Road, and the midfielder admitted: "In the first half they put us under a bit of pressure but we have done brilliantly at the back this season, and I just thought it was our night.

"The gaffer said to us at half-time to relax and enjoy our football. To be fair to him, he has been saying that to us for the last 15 or 20 games!

"Everyone has got a perception of what Neil Warnock is like, but he is a real football fanatic.

"He likes to see his team play with a smile on their face, and I feel that we have done that for the majority of the season."

Victory for QPR leaves Warnock's former side seven points adrift of safety, and Derry - pictured celebrating our second goal with scorer Alejandro Faurlin last night - admitted: "It means an awful lot to the gaffer when he plays against his old teams, and I know he really felt for Sheffield United after the match.

"But when the game is underway, you go out there and try to do your best regardless of who the opposition is. It hurts the gaffer to see their plight."

With just seven games remaining, the R's need three more wins to secure a return to the Premier League after a 15-year exile, and Derry added: "It's getting close now but we need to stay focused.

"We started the season well with a 4-0 win over Barnsley and we have managed to be consistent right the way through.

"When you are trying to be a successful side, it doesn't just click for you. It takes a lot of work and we have worked very hard all season."

One the deal has been sealed and if we get a penalty I'd love Adel and Heidar to let Derry take it.

Is there any other job where the employee routinely refers to the manager as "gaffer"? Have to admit to occasionally larking about at work calling peolple "chief" or "guv", but it's more of a homage to The Sweeney then proper business-speak.
