BERNIE ECCLESTONE: I WON'T BLOW MY DOSH IN PREMIER LEAGUE

13th March 2011 By Ted McCauley

QPR may be heading to the Premier League but owner Bernie Ecclestone insists there’ll be no huge spending spree if they get there.

The double-billionaire, who came close to buying Chelsea and had considered Liverpool before forking out for QPR, is one of Britain’s richest men.

The Championship club were last week accused of breaking league rules over third-party ownership of players, regarding their signing of Alejandro Faurlin.

That could incur a points deduction but, if things work out in the club’s favour and they are promoted this year, Ecclestone, 80, insists he won’t throw money around.

He said: “I wouldn’t have spent *anywhere near the money my good friend Roman *Abramovich has done if I had taken over Chelsea – and the same goes for QPR.

“The idea of pouring in millions to buy success is not my way of doing things.

“I won’t be trying to outdo the likes of the top, well-established Premier League teams by spreading money all over the place.

“Sure, we will try to buy players to fit the right positions – but at the right price. And by that I don’t mean spending £100million.

“We will always try to do a deal. That’s my way.”

He also insists he won’t be interfering.

Ecclestone added: “I’m happy to leave the playing side to Neil Warnock, he’s doing a great job and I trust his judgment.

“He’s a straight guy who knows all about the football side of the business.

“I’d be hard-pressed to name three of our players.

“I am not on an ego-trip. I don’t need the fame that football offers and that some guys just want to buy into.

“Football will never replace Formula One in my affections – but that’s not to say I won’t be keeping a close eye on QPR and helping the club to be what the fans want it to be.

“I have a lot of money invested in QPR and I enjoy being a winner. I always want to be the tops.

“But big spending is never a guarantee of success.”

Be doing it the Blackpool way then....

i read that as a positive! hes just stating he wont do a city or chelsea and spend stupid money on players! 100million is ridiculous and im glad we wont be spending that on one player! he does state that we will be buying competitively though, just making sure clubs dont up they're asking price by 10 or 20 million when they hear we're interested like they do with chelsea and man city!

I think he is making a fair comment: wise spending.

To be honest, he's saying it as it is. He doesn't want to be ripped off with players, and is stating that he'll be pushing for bargains from the off. Look at what happened this season. Some great bargains were had.

              Nowt wrong with that.

im on bernies side in some respects....do we want to be hated nationwide on the scale of the mugs from sw6????......im of the opinion that while you do need to speculate to accumulate would we want the albatros of massive debt that may cripple us long term if our rich 'benefactors' called it a day n walked away....prudence in bringing in sellable future assets ala tarabbt is my way of doing it long term.....buy low sell high......gems are out there to be unearthed if the right scouting people are brought in........i wrote to the club five years ago informing them of a certain gary hooper/michael kightly' arron maclean............we'd take all three today!!

Benny just curious but do you have any northern blood in you?
I played sunday league football today.

Clearly I was the best player on the pitch.

I scored 5 and made 7 last ditch tackles.

We lost 5-0 but the rest of my team were sh it!

Let's hope this is reflected in the Season Ticket prices and he doesn't rip us off. We're already paying Premiership prices.

gee i'd expect prices to nearly double 40-50 quid.

I'll pick and choose my games at that price and renew my membership

I doubt some Star reporter got an exclusive with Bernie, he's just rehashed old stuff.
