Squeeze v The Clash

squeeze are a good band, some great lyrics.
the clash were more...IMPACT...only one number 1 single, on er, re-release
but at least one of the great lps...london calling.
they mixed in reggae, dub and early rap..way ahead of rivals.

The Jam -
Definitely better than Squeezer, but not as inventive or broad in styles as The Clash IMO.

Jam were a better singles band, proven by having about a dozen singles in the top 40 at the same time after they split ! About 3 or 4 #1's also.
I love Weller's lyrics, especially around All Mod Cons & Setting Sons. In fact All Mod Cons, probably my 2nd favourite album, behind London Calling, which is always in the Top 10 of music mags lists for fav albums.
Indeed Rolling Stone voted it Best album of the 80's even though it was released in Dec '79. Typical ####s.
Also the store behind it's concept of being a double album for the price of a single, was very punk rock at the time.

Personally, I felt The Jam let themselves down with their 2nd album.
And like The Clash, their Final album (The Gift) did not live up to the standards I expected (or hoped) from them.

Good call though Modfather, I suspect were on the verge of being moved to a non QPR page.

Comparing The Clash and Squeeze is a bit like comparing Apples and Oranges.

I never was a Clash fan, just don't like the music although the obviously iconic London Calling is a winner.

I always was and still am a massive Squeeze fan, seen them live more times thatn most Man U plastics have ever been to OT! Difford & Tillbrooks' song writing is legendary to me, the quality of Jools H added and it's the perfect receipe for a pop band.

Still have all their stuff on the IP, in the car and everywhere I listen to music and the stuff never dates.

As for Modfather's comments on the Jam - yes, in their day and during that genre they were unequalled but it tends to be a bit lost once you go post Mod era.

The first album I bought was a Squeeze album. Even saw them play Wembley as support to Bryan Adams (Eh?) Agree with earlier poster that their latter albums got progressively worse. Wouldn't like to say who was the better band, just say that Squeeze was the one I was more into at the time.

Me too.

I'll be honest, if I had to listen to a "Best Of" album, between the two of them... it would be Squeeze.

But then I'm not very edgy and "trendy" when it comes to music.
I mean, I think Abba are f*cking great! And I prefer The Rolling Stones and The Kinks to The Beatles.
But I seriously like The Clash too.

Story around London Calling album -
Clash wanted to release a double album for the price of a single.
Record company said no way.
Clash asked if the could include a free 12" with the album instead.
Record Company said Yes, OK then.
Clash recorded a 9 track 12" EP for inclusion then secretly amended the RPM from Single (45) to Album (33) before going to press and selling as a sinlge album.
Cue VERY upset Record Company.
Next album was a Triple ! (Although should probably have only been a single !)
