  • Helguson and the lone striker role

Probably one of the most difficult positions to carry out successfully. People on here have cited the Drogba example, saying that he's achieved it at Chelsea but remember that he is rotated a lot. Even during his most prolific spell under Mourinho he was still benched for many games to give him recovery time from the demands that role puts on the body.

So yes HH has excelled in the role. Hulse, the latest boo-boy and low on confidence, has clearly struggled in it but by the same token lets try not to be TOO hard on him for what is a very difficult job.

From what I've read in tactical books, lone strikers need to have exceptional abilities to carry that role off as part of a team formation, but obviously in relation to the opposition.
