  • Routledge v Mackie

OK, this is looking into the future and a whole lot could have changed by the time Mackie is back - hopefully we will be in another division for starters and hopefully the Routs loan will be made permanent.

But SENTIMENT ASIDE as understandably there is masses of sympathy for poor old Jamie Mack, who would be your first choice on the right, assuming we still have Smith and Tabs to play in our three man attacking midfield formation? Would it be Mackie for his energy, work rate etc or Routs for his greater skill etc? Or even Buz? Or AN Other?

As well as making a lot of thick people very rich, football can also be a cruel game and its at least a possibility that Mackie will never really break back into the side. Rowlands and Cook - albeit a couple of further injuries down the line - have both discovered just how difficult it is once you have been out of first team reckoning for a while. Buz might now struggle, too.

Anyway, as the cliche goes, nice dilemmas to have...

i like that last part, and having a large competetive squad is always a healthy thing.

Routledge imo is the much better footballer. Mackie is a trier. If I was a full back, I would be more worried about Routledge then Mackie.

and if i was a goalie i would be much more worried about mackie than routledge.

8 goals in six years for 7 clubs in a 134 appearances against 9 goals in 23 appearances and 4 and half months. (do the maths)

Get what you are saying Robs - but as a full back I would expect a harder game with Mackie more often. Not only does he never give up, he does have amazing energy and is pretty strong in the challenge.
WR, whilst quicker and more skillful, only does it when he's in the mood, usually does the same thing every time due to his reliance on his pace rather than energy and never puts his foot in where it hurts.

agree with routledge being a far more skillfull player-great at this level but mackie's passion and eye for goal gives him the edge imo.....saying that neither are good enough for the prem if we go up-decent back up players only.

Routledge is without doubt a more proven player at this level. Mackie contributes more to the team and only time will tell replacing Mackie with Routlegde will be of benefit.

Tough call between them as players and I agree with most of the points above. Mackie hard work and graft, Routledge flashes of brilliance and good pace.

For me the biggest issue centres around Tarrabt and can we afford to have another 100% attack minded player in the team who doesn't defend or track runners. I think you can get away with 1, but Smith, Mackie, Ephraim, Faurlin and Derry are all central to Tarrabt's good form.
