    Wait a Zek, where’s that Ledesma T-shirt?
    By davidmcintyre

Emmanuel Ledesma’s possible return is an interesting one, and is bound to divide opinion.

I thought Ledesma’s time at QPR summed the club up perfectly.

First, he was hyped beyond belief before he’d even kicked a ball. Then he was hyped even more after some promising early performances, with the club even issuing a T-shirt after his hat-trick against Carlisle.

This for a 20-year-old settling in a foreign country, and after the Nicky Ward debacle which should have taught them a lesson. Limited edition? Limited commonsense, more like.

Only QPR do that. Other clubs – the sane ones – try to play things down. Only at Rangers, where the first priority seems to be to hitting back at their critics, has there been a constant desire to shout everything from the rooftops and win approval, even if it means piling pressure on talented young players like Ledesma and Ward.

If points were handed out for self-hype, Rangers would be in the Champions League by now.

Anyway, once Ledesma became the man (or boy, really) of the moment, you could have safely bet your arms and legs on him having his inevitable dip in form and then being cast aside prematurely. And he was.

I liked him as player. Talented. Really talented. But like so much in QPR Land, he wasn’t as good as he was made out to be, and then not as bad as he was made out to be. It’ll be interesting to see what Neil Warnock makes of him.

Ledesma has always been liked by Gianni Paladini and his return has been mooted a number of times before now. This will of course be taken as a sign that Paladini is involved ‘again’.

He’s always been involved. Less so than other times, but the level of his involvement has frequently fluctuated during his time at the club, usually depending on who the manager is. There’s nothing new there.

The idea that Paladini went away was as misguided as the idea that Briatore went away, or that these mythical “Mittals” people rave about took over, and loads of other nonsense taken as fact in QPR Land.

As well as Ledesma, Rangers are having another look at Craig Hammond, a prolific non-League striker who was with them on trial last February, shortly before Warnock took over.

Hammond is 23, scored loads of goals for Royston and is now with Cambridge City. He’s scored 22 times for them this season and is training with Rangers again.

Talking of non-League forwards, I was interested to read that Harrow Borough reckon their striker Troy Hewitt is likely to join Rangers on trial. Now him I like.

Rangers have indeed been looking at Hewitt, and so have quite a few other clubs. I’ve seen him a couple of times and definitely think he’s worth considering. Hewitt’s only 20, is very similar indeed to DJ Campbell, and could well be worth taking on and then loaning out to see how he gets on.

Another player Rangers are looking at is Darko Zec. He’s a Slovenian defender who turns 22 next month. There were reports he had joined Dinamo Bucharest of Romania, but I’m not sure what happened there.

He’s been invited for a trial at QPR, and as far as I know his contract at Slovenian club NK Domzale expires in the summer.

When Juve where forcibly relegated and stuffed with a 10 point deduction, they still won Serie B at a canter despite losing Ibra and Vieira.
Thank you for clarifying that Nodge. Reading your post really does bring home the obvious desperation on QPR's part.

I want to know if NW has targets why are they not getting them for him?

        With respect Nodge, they would.
The Championship is held up as a good strong league, but....... Newcastle last season??
        Same story here.

On Ledesma: I'd say even if he's only slightly improved from his last spell at QPR, he'd be well worth having as a squad player. Very talented, and should be stronger now.
Just hold back on the T-shirts this time.

        • We have lost Jamie Mackie, and with the recent comments from Warnock it appears that he isn't going to be backed financially during this transfer window - something I find extremely difficult to get my head around?!

It's possible he may be bluffing, especially considering the board stumped up an alleged £3 million for Walters earlier in the season... but time will tell if he has any considerable money to spend this month.

But if he is looking for a creative player to occupy one of the flanks, naturally he is going to look for recommendations.

Was Jamie Mackie himself not highly recommended from a friend that Warnock had down at Plymouth? That was followed up by him giving Clint Hill a tough game at Sellhurst Park and Warnock followed his interest up from there...

If Gianni/Briatore had signed him, then yes we have a problem.

But it is clear that he has merely been offered a trial and a chance to impress - Neil Warnock. He has the final say. If he likes him and brings him onboard, brilliant. If not, we look elsewhere.

As for Ledesma himself, let's not forget what was being written about him when he was here originally -

It doesn't concern me too much that he hasn't lit up Italian football since leaving us, if Warnock likes him then that can only benefit QPR.

I still laugh at the thought of Hooper/Beckford being turned away by lower league clubs as they felt they weren't good enough (!) and I think the majority of QPR supporters would kill to see either of them playing for us now?

Excellent point. But really I was trying to look at the comparison with C1 & C2.

            • Agree with alot of what you say SM but I have to disagree on this occasion.

Ledesma would be a big backwards step and show that we just want free and easy options. If he can't make it in C1 then he has hardly improved. Anyway I'd be suprised if warnocks likes what he see's.

After a kick from Derry he will go missing.

Unless we are looking for a mascot in his 20's
I played sunday league football today.

Clearly I was the best player on the pitch.

I scored 5 and made 7 last ditch tackles.

We lost 5-0 but the rest of my team were sh it!

              • The thing with Ledesma - he is a decent player with a good deal of skill. I recall MYU saying yesterday he was voted as our MOM on several ocassions when he was here before yet everyone only really remembers the hattrick v Carlisle and a huge dip in form thereafter.
Well for a start, he didn't hype himself and he didn't do the t-shirt thing - he was a decent player, not a genius and the hype seemed to work against him because as soon as his form dipped the crowd turned - shock horror!!
Also, his dip coincided with some awful decisions by ID and some shocking team performances - the kid was a teenager and a foreign lad in a strange culture to boot.
The fact he has come back for a trial leads directly to the probability that GP has suggested him to Neil and he (sensibly) has said let me have a look at him.
For me, the fact Leds has come back suggests the guy has guts given the way things panned out last time.

Beckford was offered to us for 10k but we didnt have the money, at least that's what I have heard, Austin was also offered to us.

I wasn't sure on figures, but I thought it was something ridiculous like that.

I think even Southend turned Beckford down and said he wasn't up to it.

Couldn't imagine how the boards would be if we had signed JB for £10k and said he will fire 25 goals a season!!!!

You just never know, sometimes it works out for players at some clubs. Taarabt had enormous ability, look at what Warnock has done with him.

He may be able to do similar with Ledesma???

Well thats a whole different subject altogether.

If the board aren't going to back Warnock, well... I think that's shameful considering the fantastic job that he has done. The frustrating thing is that it always seems to be that the investment will follow when we are in with a shot of playoffs/when we are in top 2/when we get promotion... But rarely does it ever seem to come to fruition.

I still maintain that Ledesma would be a great option though. Choice between watching Leon Clarke (like Norwich away a couple of weeks ago) on the left or Emmanuel Ledesma is a complete no brainer for me...

It would be unforgiveable if the board don't back Warnock this month, but that's not to say Ledesma should be cast off just because he is available on a free transfer.

                          • Whilst it's impossible to overlook the fact that he's only been playing at a mediocre league level since his departure, Ledesma brought something different to the side when he was here. The impudence, the cheeky flicks, the schoolboy shuffle closer to the dead ball when he was in the wall.... Adel excepted, we lack creative players (although Buz and Ali both have their moments); if NW can extract the best from Ledesma, as he has with Taarabt, we could be onto a winner.

Plus, it'd enable me to wear my signed Ledesma t-shirt again!

                            • Beckford was never offered to us. We had him in twice (under different managers) on trial to have a look. Both thought he wasn't quite up to it. I happen to agree but I know plenty will disagree.

Charlie Austin was recommended to the Club when he was at Poole Town by the Dorset/Hants scout/fan who recommended Wade Elliott to Steve Burtenshaw 10 or so years ago.

                              • Just a quick pedantic point but where are we pulling these facts that he failed in Serie C?

As the facts state that he played a season on loan in C1, half a season with his co-owners in Serie B, and is now back with Genoa in Serie A.
