After last year, loan players leave me a bit cold and nervous, and I think there are 2 types, and as a club we need to be careful.
A young aged early 20's player is a good option. They need experience, haven't peaked yet, and see it as a chance to prove themselves to increase their value and status. Walker is a good example.
Aged 30+ loanees are a problem with me. They are generally on the slide, only motivated by personal fitness, we remember them for how good they were, as opposed to how good they might be now. But they do add experience. Woodgate is a prime example.
Young players like Kieran Gibbs, Daniel Sturridge would be great loanees. (dreaming of course, although DS wants to go out on loan I see)
Beckham, Woodgate, Keane, surely just upset the team balance because they aren't motivated by team and individual progress?
