Thats the gamble on lower league players, but IMO if we want to go anywhere next season we have to get goalscoring strikers in, and why not look to L1 instead of getting prem rejects like Helguson?

nearly every transfer is a gamble really. just doesnt happen for some players at clubs.

I dont think David McGoldrick would cost anymore than 500k, proven Championship goalscorer as well.
I wanted us to sign Beckford a while back, but I think that is old news now & I think McGoldrick would be the better bet. Done very well in a struggling Saints team.
we should be keeping tabs on him IMO.
Lose 10 players from the squad & bring 5 new players in IMO.
            3 fullbacks
            1 left winger
            1 striker

Interesting if you look at Championship top scorers where they've all come from...

Ebanks-Blake - started at Man U, highly thought of there
Doyle - admittedly a Reading gamble, played in top tier of Irish league
Scotland - played in Scottish prem for a number of years
                McCormack - ditto
Smith - played for Watford in prem
Hulse - played in Prem for West Brom and Sheff Utd
Phillips - played in prem for a numebr of years
Gallagher - played for Blackburn in prem

seems to suggest that players from lower leagues don't tend to do that well doesn't it?

there are always gems to find, but imho a lot of money is wasted on players from lower leagues...Freddy Eastwood? Lee Trundle? Billy Sharp?

You say "played in prem", but where did most of these players come from?

Sorry, maybe I didn't phrase it right.

Point was that Beckford and Cox have never played any higher than League 1, whereas the others have had experience at a higher level. Remember back to the days under Olly in League 1, the football was dire and bad strikers scored goals.

Obviously if a player has class at a lower level (like Kightly) then he will re-produce this at a higher level, but for every Kightly there are 10 Adam Millers imho.

Look at our best attacking players. Routledge has a lot of prem experience, vine has played in the prem, buzacky came from porto and you can see the quality the taraabt has.

I'd rather pay whatever we did for Connolly than a million for lee trundle.

As others have suggested signing any player can often be a gamble. Wolves signed Vokes who had success in the lower leagues but young and inexperienced as well as Iwelumo who had scored goals at this level for Colchester and Charlton. Iwelumo has had the better season but they signed both because they needed strength in depth. They have now added Harewood to that as they still believe they need to strengthen.

We need to sign a minimum of 2 strikers possibly even 3 if Di Carmine goes back to Italy. A blend of youth and experience would be perfect.

                          Cox

Pretty impressive stats considering where Swindon are in the League.

In view of Briatore's latest outburst,we might get Nygaard and Furlong back if the fans stump up the £100 transfer fees and treat FB to another new chandelier.
