  • Jan transfers targets - Why?

I have read alot of transfer rumors, requests and pleas for transfers but surely the targets need to address the reason why? (sorry for the long read)

People have said - "we need a striker", others have said "we need a center back" and others have said " we are a one man team, we need another Adel"
The point of this post is not put names forward or to start rumors but to ask, what is the reason behind why we need "Jan transfers"? i am no analysis so if the point below are not 100%

Reason one "we need a striker" but do we?
We are the second highest scorers behind Leeds and joint second with Watford on 42. Cardiff who have Boothroyd, Bellend and Whittingham only have 38. Adel is joint 5th with 11 goals and Mackie is 11th with 9 and with Leeds the only teams with 2 inside the top 20. We are do not tops the shooting charts, either in number of shots or shots on target which means overall we have a very good converstion rate.

Lets say we get a new striker what part of the team is going to suffer, who do we drop and what impact would this have to the rest of the team - Mackie we will lose his enthuisam, his never say die attitude which has brough many a goal this season, we drop Smith we lose his wing play, his goals and his work ethic, we drop HH or Hulse and lose that phyiscal presenace, so is this a critical part that needs tweeking.

Reason 2 "we need a Center Back" but do we?
We have conceeded less goals than anyone else in this division and apart from Hull and CP less than everyone else has conceeded at Home on its own. We have had more clean sheets than anyone else with only Swansea coming close with 11. We have only conceeded 3 once this season and only conceeded 2 on 3 occasions (i dont count PV as it was a second string and the mickie mouse cup). Not conceeding many has meant we have been always been with a chance of a result regardless of how bad we have played, this to me is KEY why we went so long unbeaten. People say we are slow at the center backs and I agree, but i dont think its out achillies heel, as Blackpool were never quick (Evatt being one of the slowest CB i have ever seen) and they are holding there own in the premiership. We win most headers, and so far no Center Forward has dominated us to such an extent that it has cost us points.

People say CC should come back, well I personnely think he past it, and in the premiership showed he not good enough at that level. Buying him would mean replacing him if we got promoted. Another person mentioned Shittu - well sorry from what i ahve seen he has lost it, like CC not good enough for the premiership and too me not even better than Fitz Hall, dont get me wrong he is and always will be a hero of mine, i just think he not the same player that left.

Reason 3 "we are a one man team"This is difficult to argue against, but when you have one of the most talent players in England at this moment in time and most probably even in the top 10 in the world, then yes he is going to dominate. If you back in time most great teams have a "Adel" (Man Utd had Ronaldo, Becks, Cantona - Liverpool Daglish, Torres, Gerald - Chelsea Drogba, QPR Bowles, Marsh, Wegalie) but they need the platform, and that were i disagree as without Derry, Faurlin, Mackie he would not have the orchestra to conduct. With Buzz getting fit, Smith crosses and HH / Hulse / Angie phyiscal preseance we have a plan B unlike our competitors we can pla direct. This showed in the 1st part when like at Derby we can back from 2 down, at CP it wasnt fancy foorwork or football that got these goals but direct football.

So with these thoughts i go back to the original question "do we need to buy and if so why?"

I think we do need to buy but not for the reasons above and i dont know who. I think we need to buy to:

"Start to build for next year" - we need to buy players that can step up so next year we dont need to get so many new faces. This we hopefuly help us stay there any allow us to build for years of the good times instead of playing yo-yo.

"Also I think we need to freshen up" - Fresh faces adds addtional feel good, new ideas, freshness, engery to prevent us from tiring as we come to the final straight. These sigings wont be so much on "talent" or were they fit in, but more of personality like Mackie, Derry and Hill.

Sorry for the long post, but if we are going to bring personnel in, i think we need to identify why, and what we need instead of taking just the easy solutions as this could prove to be very costly if we do - just my thoughts?
One for all.... and all for one

        Good read.

I think what we have is good enough to go up, but when in the prem we need to strengthen the squad with at least 8 decent signings to stay up imo.

          *round of applause*

I think most fear injury and suspension and with that rhe problems you've rightly addressed are reasons why people want signings. Forget who or which positions but there is a what if feeling on this board. What if Taraabt or Connolly or Faurlin were to get injured? We have an excellent first team and do have afew quality reserves - Cerny, Orr, Buzsaky but if they become first teamers due to injury who else do we have? What does happen if Plan A doesn't work?

Very good post, but we must strengthen. If MC or KG are injured, we're in trouble. If Mackie or Smith are injured, we can't afford another one, or a suspension. If we lose Faurlin or Derry, we'll struggle again, unless we keep Rowlands. If we lose HH or Hulse, we have no real backup.

              As Ric said...Strength in depth.

                Good post.

But as a squad we don't have depth in certain positions. We are overrun by poor quality strikers for example, but only 2 or maybe 3 decent ones.Injuries and suspensions take their toll over a season.

Centre back has very little cover if Connolly and Gorkks get injnured. Can't keep using Connolly or Walker to cover others, they should be playing their natural positions every week if fit.I would get someone in like Kilgallon who can cover both centre back and left back as Borrowdale is poor and we have no natural cover for Hill that is any good.

Why undo all this good work so far by not strengthening?.

Thanks for the comments and in some areas we do lack depth. But the next problem you have, how can we strenghten the team and keep the team spirt. Most of the names mentioned wont want to come and play second fiddle and sit on the bench, and some of them i dont think even add depth.

So far apart from Kilgallon I have not seen many names that i think acheive this, most of the names from my point veiw weaken the squad. Lets take CC / Shittu both are good players but I dont think neither are any better than Fitz Hall or as good as Clint Hill as center back (that is his best postion), this give us two backups. I am open to having another but they need to be better than whats been mentioned.

So if your saying its depth and strenght the places i think we are weak on are Central Midfeild as Rowland is injury prone and to me very incosistant (even in his best season would play well one week and poor the next), Machon cant get on the bench and is not the best passer of the ball. Left back we only have Hill, Right back we have Orr and Walker and up front I think we only have Smith who can cross a ball. I love hogan but he is too incostistant and Mackie is not a natural winger. Routledge i think clashes with Adel with the fact he needs to be on the ball as much as possible if your going to see the best of him and he is no where near in the same class.

I feel a lot of the names being mentioned are to me easy names to shout about, but do not address the postion were we lack depth or strenght.

                        Good response Bigears.

Main reason i mentioned Kilgallon is he is available for both left back and centre back. And left back is a position we are weak in.If Hill get's injured we don't wanna put Connolly there from centre back,or play Borrowdale IMO.

Kilgallon is a decent player who could well fancy a move away from a struggling club.No idea what sort on length contract he's on though.

Apparently Vaagen Moen can play anywhere in midfield, but we deffo need cover for Faurlin, Buzz is a different type of player.

Mahon or Walker can play in that position,or even Rowlands

I think NW is aware of this and is the reason why he is looking at loans. 99/100 times loanees are players who aren't getting first team football and will be willing to fight for a place. Killgallon can't get into the Sunderland team hence why he's now at Boro but why sign for us knowing he'll be on the bench? We have to go for players who aren't getting matches who like Smith will bide their time for a starting place.

                              Fryatt, Cox, Waghorn for example.
