very good player at his level, bit of a gamble if the rumours are true. wouldn't be the man to 'fire' us to the prem but a good addition all the same

At this crucial moment in the club's history I would really like a proven striker at Championship level or above but a) suspect the budget is nowhere near as high as the "we should sign Keane" brigade might hope b) we used to have a proud history of turning up gems from the lower leagues, so don't think we should get all sniffy about such players and c) we have to back Warno's judgement.

That's true, we have made a living out of getting players from lower levels, and polishing them into diamonds. Plenty of examples of that in our past.

I always use the example of Stan Bowles when he replaced Marsh.
I wonder what the reaction to signing a bit of an unknown maverick from Carlisle Utd would have got, if the internet had been around then?!
I think "sniffy" covers that pretty well!

This fella Davies looks to be a journeyman/one-season wonder, going purely by his goal stats... but I'm sure Warnock wont have just checked Wikipedia, like I have.

The money thing is a puzzle... how much is avalable to NW to spend?
Is he "doing a Wenger", and refusing to splash big money for the sake of it, or maybe the "Warchest" isn't what it's cracked up to be? Dunno.

The big bid for Jon Walters seems to suggest that he can spend a couple of million if he wants, but the actual signings themselves suggest that we are being ultra careful.

I suppose we'll find out on Jan 31st... because if they* don't splash some big dough this january, with the position we are in now... then you suspect they never will.

              (*whoever "they" are?!)

Gods, Stan replacing Marsh a bit before my time but I remember being shocked that Sinton was being replaced by some unknown winger from Blackpool, but the lad did OK....

Do though think at this time in this position we do need someone more proven. As you say on another thread if for whatever reason we can't sign a really good striker permanently, a loan might be the way forward.

I've always liked the fact that we were the club who did bring unknown players and turn them into really good players but I don't think right now is the time to try and do it again. He may take to the league like a duck to water but at the same time it could be a costly experiment. I'd rather go for experience at this level then to take a risk. Maybe in the summer dip into the lower league and gradually bring players into the first team but when the first team could do with improving now personally I'd wait.

But as others have said Warnock should be trusted and he might not have the budget to buy experience.

Alex Smithies, great goalie for this club: 3,5million
