QPR boss rules out move for Cardiff City striker Michael Chopra

NEIL Warnock reminded his QPR bosses last night just who picks the team when he turned down the chance to sign £3million Michael Chopra.

The Cardiff City striker from Indian background is hoping to swap Cardiff City for west London – a move that instantly found favour with the Indian side of Rs administration that includes managing director Ishan Saksena and vice-chair Amit Bhatia, hoping to build a QPR fan base in a country of more than a billion.

But Warnock doesn’t think he could find a place for a player in a team unbeaten in the Championship – and four points clear of Cardiff at the top of the table.

"I’ve got nothing against Michael," said Warnock, "he’s a fine player. And were he to become available at a knockdown price – it would be worth a look.

"But he’s better suited to a 4-4-2 set-up – and we don’t really play that here.

"I think once our people find out what he would cost including wages – and I’m guessing at anything upwards of a £3million transfer - they’ll think again, despite what he might do for Rangers’ profile in India."

fair play to NW but he did seem to want him last summer.
maybe more mind games to get him at a knockdown price?

        Good.

Warnock knows what he wants... and a serial £3m overweight sulker on the bench isn't what he needs.
No matter how many goals he may have scored for Cardiff in the past.

They've been skint, they've sold players to stay alive. They would have sold him too... but how many Premier League teams have made a serious move for him in all that time??
I want someone on the up, someone hungry, someone who will happilly fit into our pattern.
        That aint Chopra.

edit: If we're going to plunder Cardiff, I'd rather go for the better player who's out of contract in the summer.... Chris Burke.

        Good player.

And you don't think he's playing the game, here?

I agree with Ric, and believe that for the right price, NW would snap their arm off. He'll score for fun in our side, IMHO, and would score the goals needed to take us up. We've got one formation as things stand, and it won't always work. With Chops in the squad, we've got options.

Some players just work at this level, and Chopra is one of those. You never know...He may even find his feet in the Prem with us...Not that I can say for sure...

Honestly, mate, I personally think he'd be great for us.

            He's an ok player.

But I can't see NW changing our entire system to accommodate him.

It's ok if he's a player who's willing to bide his time, wait for his chance for NW to change the system during a game, and be patient.
But I just get the feeling that Chopra is a bit above himself, and isn't the type of bloke to be patient, like Tommy Smith was.

Yes, NW might be playing games with CCFC, and trying to knock the price down... he is good at that... but on this occasion, I think he means what he says about Chopra not fitting into what we've built so far.

I agree with the norweigen beauty, Burke looks cardiffs main asset and graham would score plenty of goals in a side that creates chances.
I played sunday league football today.

Clearly I was the best player on the pitch.

I scored 5 and made 7 last ditch tackles.

We lost 5-0 but the rest of my team were sh it!

if warno is playing mind games to reduce the price, then great. if not he is showing one of his (very few) unimpressive sides: maybe we do mainly play with one up top but wouldnt it be nice to have the option of playing 4-4-2. Sometimes the way we play just doesn't work (eg against Burnley, Norwich, Millwall) and then it would be great to have a plan b. mistake to become too enslaved to a system imho, the really top managers are able to adapt.

I see what you're saying, and I kind of agree.

But, the point about Chopra in particular is that he's too expensive to be a plan B. Too demanding of a regular start (given his sulking at Cardiff), even with Bellamy and Bothroyd picked (understandably) ahead of him.

I do think we need the option of having a pacy striker to bring on, or start in certain games... but maybe Chopra is the wrong type of character, at the wrong price.

I'd say that's what Warnock is more concerned about... rather than Chopras ability, or the need we have for an option like him.

Maybe someone younger would be better, someone who is willing to be patient, and not rock the boat.

                        It's a tricky one.

But if we are still top in January then it really does - without hopefully tempting fate - become an exercise both in finding the two or three players who will a) ensure promotion but b) also look like making the step up to the premier league. No point buying players for five months. No point buying another Clarke. If we are to buy a pacey striker there is no point, imo, buying a young hopeful - it needs to be someone with a proven track record. If not Chopra, then in my opinion it needs to be someone really quite like him. Him, Nugent, whoever, but its not going to be some freebie. Or if it is, its going to be a waste of time.

                            I agree, it is tricky.

I'm not so sure that Chopra is a Premier League player, his record at Newcastle was terrible... so maybe we differ on his worth.

If it's purely for the run-in this season, then IMO a young hungry player, or Kevin Phillips would be a better bet. No huge ego there, no sulks, and realistic about how many games/minutes he can play.

If it's with a mind on the following season in the Premier League (big IF!) ..... then you're looking at a whole different ball game.
Really tricky to buy for the Prem when you're still in the Championship.

Personally, I'd say get promoted first... then worry about, and shop for that particular part of the puzzle in the summer.

With talk of Bothroyd tipped to leave in Jan why would Cardiff want to sell another striker?

They are second in the league and a great chance to get promoted from a very average Championship this season. Surely their new backers would carry their current players for another 6 months if there's a good chance of hitting a £60m jackpot.

All paper talk in my opinion
