Think it runs a bit deeper than that. FIFA flatters itself it has a political role (big and little "p") versions) and is ultimately self-serving. That means they will always prefer a country where football is not already the dominant sport - as evidence witness US getting two world cups since ours, - Sth Africa and Japan/Korea......and so on. Brazil only one to break that trend and that only as it was patently inexcusable to ignore the bid of the 5 times world champions that had never had it had it.
Add in the fact FIFA likes to give itself some rather grander role in geo-politics and claims to use the tournament as a way to "reach out" to the "global community" and you can see England was too easy to ignore: we're already footie mad so the tournament here would not create new junkies and already mainstream in both FIFA and world politics. Go the outsider go Russia - money and influnece to be extended there.
Still shocking - based purely on facilities we had the thing in our pocket.Comment

Qatar. What a waste of a World Cup place. Their one and only appearance in the finals ever and it will only be the 2nd time in history that the host nation doesn't make it through the group stage. Joke.Comment

The world is very different today to how it was fifty years ago and the game of football, like it or not, now reflects 21st Century globalisation. We may moan about how no-one likes us (the English, that is), but is it surprising when our hooligan past is still revered by many? Throw in crap weather and politicians who don't know their #### from their elbow and it's no surprise that our bid failed; let's face it, when vacuous pop culture icons like David Beckham, Kelly Brook and Simon Cowell are your trump cards, you know that you've been dealt a bad hand.
While many of us like to harken back to some mythical golden age, we've got to realise that things are different now. Foreign dishes regularly top lists of Britain's favourite food; many of our flagship companies are now in foreign hands; even the spine of our own club is from overseas (Indian owners, Gorkss, Faurlin, Taarabt, etc).

You mean you dont think they are not more interested in how much money they can make and are blatently anti English, as is the french thwat at uefa.

The Panorama program on corruption/bribery within FIFA, for anyone that missed it.
I dont see why we should have to brown nose and kowtow to that bunch of crooks. As the program says, the whole organisation needs an international, independent investigation. Some of the findings are truly shocking. Blatter, Havelange, Jack Warner, Ricardo Teixeira, Nicolas Leoz, Issa Hayatou etc etc all corrupt, the lot of them.Comment

i think all English Footy fans feel the same dilemma, we want to be able to stand up against their corrupt and unfair 'owning' of world football but at the same time want to host the world cup so much that we would be prepared to 'play the game' .
I have thought for ages that there should be a power shift, the English , Spanish, Italian and German leagues basically run football, they should create their own governing body along with UEFA, you watch the other countries coming on board.Comment

Qatar proves both points. First, it and its region is seen as a gap in a world football map. FIFA (to fulfil a FIFA role above national and regional federations like the FA and UEFA) needs football to be the dominant sport everywhere. There are also internal politics about different weights between the regional Federations (UEFA CONACAF etc). Qatar got it to cast FIFA's shadow and largesse over the region more clearly. The other candidates were miles ahead in being able to host a tournament. Plus I do not doubt for a moment that Qatar greased the right palms to get it.
Same with Russia. It is to stretch FIFA out East, England is already locked in, and to nod at shifting the power of UEFA. Plus I don't doubt they alsio greased the right palms.
Who is going to get FIFA to change? It can't even change its own President and its members rely on the crumbs from its table.Comment
