  • Our 'rivalry' with Cardiff

As far as I can recall, Cardiff weren't on our radar before the play off final. I may be wrong but as far as I can remember they were never rivals up to that point were they?

Is the new 'rivalry' one way traffic? Do they hate us more than they hate any other English clubs? If so why?

They were a shitty little club we felt embarassed to play. Remember the first time I saw them play was against us in the early eighties. They were crap. They had one decent player (a young black guy, a winger, who went on to be a bit of star - can't remember his name). But the only thing anyone at that match would have taken away from it was the two goals from Simon Stainrod - one a great, powerful volley from outside the area but the other an over head scissor kick again from outside the area which to my young eyes was not so very far short of the Trevor Sinclair spectacular - and always a disappointment to me that even among Rs fans this seems forgotten as I would have thought it was up there as among the top ten/ twenty goals ever scored by our club.

Think that game ended 4-0 to us Stainrod?

Your right, they were a poxy little outfit that used to get 4000 gates. I used to put them in the same bracket as small outfits like Brentford and Orient. They never had anyone fit enough to lace simons boots.

Over the last 7-8 years we have been involved in promotion races with Cardiff and i suppose because of the ammount of big games we have played against each other so the rivalry has increased. I remember going to Ninian Park as a 17 year old in an FA cup tie and knew little of them but to be honest it was an eye opener, their fans tried to burn the english QPR flags that were drapped over the wall at the away end and built a hate filled atmosphere during the game and waited for us outside at the end (knowing full well we'd be wrapped up by the plod!!)
From then on i didnt like them and when we began to play them regulary in the league i detested them even more mainly due to the silly hangers on thinking that because they supported Cardiff and had been on the p iss that they were members of the soul crew and that gave them authority to bowl around town.

Now they are our bitter rivals because of the play off final. Before that thjey were a divvy little club from a shanty town. Its been 7 long years of hurt. Would be sweet justice to beat them tomorrow and beat them to win the league too. Still winds me up thinking about that poxy last minute ET goal.
