Anonymous Survey - Video Technology

Dear Editor,

I have a project ongoing that I hope you might be able to help with in terms of wider exposure. I am carrying out an anonymous survey on fans' views towards whether the game needs video technology or not. Could you possibly post this on your site for me or allow me to register and I’ll post? The text is below:

"A colleague and I at Staffordshire University are carrying out an online survey on fans' views towards video technology in football. Fans continue to pay for tickets, subscriptions and merchandise but they are always the last to be consulted on decisions. We've decided to give them a voice. The address is: http://www.topfan.co.uk and the site is being managed by Staffordshire University (where I am employed). The survey will only take a couple of minutes (only 9 questions)."

What they are now talking about bringing in 'the goal line technology' (only to show whether the ball has crossed the line) is a step forward but imo is a stupid idea as apparantly it would not be able to be used for example if a hand had stopped it crossing the line. Also they are saying the decision has to be made in 1 second, do you realise how quick that is and how would they do it, refer to video technology etc and make the decision to do that in one second. Don't understand it myself.

Mark, when we were talking about that, it was the other way round, if the ball had been helped across the line, then the replay would have to give the goal if the ref hadn't seen the handball. And it would have to be done in secret at the time. that's why big screens never show contentious issues, apart from that world cup game, what a laugh that was.

If a 'goal-line' handball incident was penalised and the ref hadn't seen it, then the argument will then be, what about if there was a close 'goal-line' offside picked up by the camera. you have to give that as well. and then it snowballs, fouls, what next?

What is wrong and causing so much controversy is the fact that fifa and eufa wont let it go to public debate where it can be thrashed to death, and then the public can see why there is so much resistance from the ruling bodies. Communicate you buffoons!

It seems to me to be a case of do as little as possible, but show that they have still allowed some kind of technology to help, where in reality unless it really helps in all cases i don't see the point of it.

Can I be the first to point out (or the latest) that your survey can only ever be statistically invalid. First rule of quantitative research is have a numerator and denominator. You ar fishing with a loaded question as bait from an open-ended and immeasurable pool. This is the shoddy research that leads to claims like "blokes that wear white socks make better snooker players". Not that they don#t but this won't prove it or even show it. Do it properly if you are going to do it at all eh.
