  • In All Honesty..We Don't Look Like A Top 2 Team

I know that we are undefeated and that 8 wins and 6 draws from 14 games, is what we craved for before the start of the season, it goes without saying that since we beat Palace away we have not been playing that well. Would add, I didn;t thinkwe we were that great against Doncaster or Millwall

I have seen a noticeable downturn in performances and that has allowed us to sneak draws, when in reality we could have lost at least one. Today, we went 1-0 up and should have gone on from that, instead we were outbattled and lucky to escape with a 1-1 draw. The best chances fell to Burnley and we just didn't turn up today.

I am normally very positive, but today like the previous few games we have shown that if we continue like this till end of season, we will fall short of automatic promotion. We simply don't thave the cutting edge and a goal poacher like say Phillips at Birmingham City and come the end of season, I think that will be our downfall. Admittedly Hulse has been out for some time and lacks match practice, but he along with Helguson are simply not going to score 20 goals plus to maintain our automatic push for promotion. The reason that we cannot get automatic promotion without a top striker is that with players like Derry and Faurlin whilst excellent defensive players in midfield they are not in the same mould as say someone like Nolan at Newcastle United last season, who scored plenty.

I am very confident that we will make the Play offs and think this will be the best way of any kind of promotion. I am absolutely delighted with the start of the season and anyone who told me, we would have this start after 14 games, I would have ripped there hands off.

I am a firm believer that home crowds influence referrees decisions and if Burnley had played at somewhere like Cardiff today, you would have seen Eagles sent off, yet we hardly react to his two fouls after he gets booked for diving. Add to that, it is disconcerting we simply don';t test the goalkeeper and never took hold of the game for long periods and haven't done at home for some time now. I have a feeling that after 14 games it slightly flatters us and think come Christmas we will see whereabouts we will finish in May.

I still think Tarrabt makes things happen for us and without him we resort to the long ball and become fairly predictable. I would love mackie to score a goal, because each game he goes without one must be effecting his confidence. I have hardly notice Hogan in the last few games and surely now it must be time to give Tommy Smith a start?

As shown against Norwich, Bristol City and today against Burnley we rely on players giving 100% and under Warnock they sure do give there all, but I am questioning tonight whether they are good enough to see us automatically promoted come May. We would have to win a number of home or away games against very good teams in this division and I am not sure whether we are good enoug for automatic promotion, but instead my money would be on a top 6 position.

    Just my opinion of course.

good post - i agree with the majority in your post

Alas agreed. and as the team who would be falling down the table into the play offs without much momentum, v little chance of going up. Early days of course and the board might decide to step up to the plate in January, tho that's unlikely with the flavio situation.

        Very good post Pete.

Feel a bit bad saying it but we really need new blood in the squad & imo the Jan transfer window can't come soon enough. Leon Clarke, Pat Agyemang on the bench is really not going to get us what we need = goals.

Other than that we have a good squad back to front especially with players like Cook & Rowlands to return at just about the right times. But as mentioned many times by many posters I'd really like to see us get a quick young predator in the box type of striker, I feel Jermaine Beckford would flourish for us but as my Sig says IN WARNOCK WE TRUST!

I agree with most of that Pete, but in no way were we lucky to escape with a draw. Nor did Burnley have the best chances.
They had 1 gilt edged chance when Kenny made a brilliant save.
I recall prescious little from them 2nd half, yet for us Gorkks, Derry, Agyemang (x2) all had great chances and Smith came pretty close at the end.

I suspect like most of our draws of late, with the possible exception of Swansea, the stats will show greater possession, and chances on & off target to us.
But for all that, we just don't seem to be forcing the keeper to make a save !

We need Buzacky back, and Mackie needs to get back his early season form. Helguson and Hulse just are not getting the job done.

Good post Pete. We definitely need a proven striker in January because we cannot keep relying on Taarabt to assist and score at the same time. Got a feeling that Mackie will not get back to his form. Hope that Smith start next match and see how he will perform.

I think play offs is where we realistically will be fighting for. We are not the best team in the league and there are a lot about same level as us.

We have a good manager and we may spend in Jan. That is where this season is won or lost IMHO.

Can't stand the idea of play off agony....... that's why some people have been nervous on this board lately, but as soon as you criticise anything - get accused of being negative whinger. Or a Cardiff fan by some people!!

Totally agree with your point about Faurlin and Derry. We lack goals from midfield and as you say the likes of Nolan or even Whittingham at Cardiff is something we didn't have yesterday. A couple of times the ball dropped to Derry and Gorkss in the penalty area and if that was Nolan one of them would have been put away. I'd confidently say that Buzsaky could have scored one of those opportunities as well.

Mackie does need a goal because on two occassions he selfishly went alone in desperate attempt to get his goal. However in his defence he could have offloaded to Hulse (in the first half) or Clarke (near the end) but with neither of those players in any type of goal scoring form it probably did make sense to try himself.

Come January,IF the squad isent of top top quality Warnock will be given the money he needs to sort things out.
Short term, I would start Tommy Smith sooner rather than later.
What Ialso have noticed(on TV) is that the team doesnt really gel going forward.
Why not use more widht? It will probably makes us more unpredictable

                      Only a suggestion though??

buzsaky is our nolan.. probably wont score as many as nolan but given the chances he will get us 15 for the season. i noticed it at bristol city. as good as derry and faurlin are defensively.. neither look like they will score more than 5 combined.

we need a gerrard, lampard, nolan etc that box to box midfielder who can do the running up and down and get on the end of things. taarabt offers us a lot but his decision making sometimes halts us.

But what does a top 2 side look like? Not so long ago people were saying how good Millwall were and how good Watford were. Boro were favourites. Some were talking Bristol City up. Burnley and Hull have parachute payments plus promotion experience but none of them look serious candidates for automatic promotion. Are Coventry and Swansea good enough to maintain their performances? Or are they just like so many other teams in the fact that if they lost one or two players they would suffer. Pompey are the form team but like the others mentioned they don't have the depth.

Arguably this could be the most open division for years but there is no team that looks a dead cert for promotion other than Cardiff.

Hulse has had about 90 mins of action( late sub at Bristol City and 70 odd mins yesterday) so to say he isnt doing it is harsh. He's also not 100% fit
