  • 1st or 2nd? Does it really matter?

When QPR got promoted to the old First Division in 68 and 73 we finished 2nd. In 83 we finished 1st. The end result was the same, we played top flight football the following seasons. In 2004 we got promoted the Championship by finishing 2nd.

The only time finishing 1st or 2nd in a league was important to QPR was obviously 1976, when we missed out on being (Then) First Division Champions to Liverpool.

Really can't see what all the fuss is about as to whether Cardiff overtake us or not, as long as we get promoted. IMO.

totally agree mate, would be nice to be champions, but that would just be a bonus, going up is the target whether 1st 2nd or play-offs.

It does not matter indeed. My only worry is can we hold on 2nd spot?

I think every QPR fan would take 2nd at the end of the season now.

The reason some people are a little worried is that 3rd place usually doesn't go up...6th does!! We don't wan't to come 6th and to come 1st or 2nd is very hard in this league, whatever start you get.

Some people on the boards think that a good start means we are almost up and that no one can comment otherwise without being branded a whinger or negative.

The facts are that there are more than just 2 clubs that could finish in the top 2. I don't think we are the best team in the league, so it will be a roller coaster.

I also think that none of us look back on those 2nd place promotion finishes and rue them or cry ourselves to sleep over them. We just look back on those years (those who can remember and I don't remember 68) and say "Yes, that's the year we got promoted" and not get pointlessly angry about it.

Also, don't think Baggies fans are too upset about finishing runners up to Newcastle last season, they're just glad they are up.

Yes, Being Champions would be nice but it's really not that important in the grand scheme of things. Think it only matters for the summer and then it's all forgotten by the following August.

Also, on a personal level, not too sure I like hearing that bloody Queen song they always play when you become Champions or want people shouting and singing "Champi-o-nee" at me all summer whenever I wear my colours. Nightmare.

Personally I like winning things. I don't know...it's probably because I'm a man or something. But, winning is important. If you aren't in a sport to win it then you might as well f***ing quit. I would happily take 2nd or play off winners (wembley trip) but I would be a LOT more happier coming 1st. In anything I do or support. We should as a club all be together in driving the team to be number one. I am getting a feeling that a lot of our fans are simply not champion minded or driven individuals who will settle for things. Poor terrible mindset for a man to have.

Winning the Championship isn't winning. It is qualifying for the next round - the Premier League.

There is only one team that are champions every year and it isn't the winners of the 2nd Tier.

Wrong mindset in my opinion. We don't have the oppertunity to win the Premier League. So we shuold be trying to win everything. And even then when it comes to winning the premier league it would have to be broken down into smaller achievable goals, i.e. winning the championship first. Get the champion mentality. Drive. Strive to be the best we can be. We have the players. We have the manager. We have the fans. We have everything but the psyche, the most important tool required in sport.

                        Rieger. Genuine question...

When we got promoted in 2004 as Runners up, did you feel angry or annoyed that we hadn't won that league or did you feel genuine relief that we had got promoted on the final day of the season after the play-off heartbreak from the previous season?

It's all about opinions Rieger - I respect yours, but don't neccessarily agree.

I would, of course, rather win than come second. BUT not at the expence of going up.

If we needed a point in our last game to come 2nd and 3 points to win the league. We are level in the last seconds against a team that has to win to stay up. Would you want us to hold the ball and get promoted?

Or throw people forward to try and win the division, risk a counter attack and not going up?

I think your argument only applies if you're actually competing in the thing yourself, not watching it from the sidelines with a beer in your hand.

cardiff have beaten so they are not invincible, so you have got no worries of second place, so as you have been saying, its first all the way for you.

oh and great shout about the play offs. the play offs is what we want. lol.
