Ambitious Crystal Palace owner Steve Parish eyes the play-offs

AMBITIOUS co-chairman Steve Parish has refused to rule out a push for the play-offs this season.

Palace are still entrenched in the Championship drop zone despite picking up a vital victory at Norwich on Tuesday night.

And most fans have predicted a scrap to stave off the drop to League One rather than a fight for the Premier League.

Even manager George Burley has admitted that, after a summer where he had to rebuild the playing squad, the campaign is likely to be a struggle.

But Parish isn't a man to settle for mediocrity and says that he has seen enough in recent matches against sides at the top of the division to make him believe sneaking a place in the play-offs is not an impossible dream.

"Listen, when George Burley came in and was interviewed for the job, not once did he sell himself to us by saying 'I can guarantee you promotion this season or next'," said Parish. "He always maintained it would take time. Realistically this is a season of consolidation.

"But, having said that would I be blown away if we did manage to make the play-offs? Absolutely not.

"We've played Cardiff, Queens Park Rangers and then Norwich in the last few weeks and, tell me if I'm wrong, but I didn't think there was much to choose between the sides.

"This is a very close division. I saw George after the Norwich game and I said to him we're only nine points off the play-offs now.

"I was very pleased for George and for Dougie [Freedman] after that win. They have been working very hard. They're trying to implement a new style of play to the team and that will take time."

Parish also said that, should the Eagles be in contention near the top six come January, he and his partners would not be afraid to back Burley in the transfer window.

"I'm getting a little frustrated at this assumption that we've got no money. Combined, we've probably got more than the guys at QPR," he said.

"Yes we want to run it as a sustainable business, but if we had a chance of pushing for the play-offs and thought it was the correct decision to spend a little extra, then we could. We are not a poor football club."

They'll have the biggest budget in League One then...

Either that or they will prove that they have learnt NOTHING from the TWO periods of Administration they have enetered into; spend more, get into debt when tinpot owners give up, come out of Admin paying 1p in the pound screwing over everyone AGAIN and get away with f-all punishment AGAIN - its PalA R S E s way I'm afraid...

Every time they lose, a big smile appears on my face...
