  • Pitch Size, Is this a factor?

Here are the pitch sizes of all the teams in the NPower Championship this season stating with ours,

    QPR 112 x 72
    Barnsley 110 x 75
    Burnley 115 x 73
    Bristol City 115 x 75
    Cardiff City 110 x 75
    Coventry 105 x 68
    Crystal P 110 x 74
    Derby 110 x 72
    Doncaster 100 x 70
    Hull 114 x 78
    Ipswich 112 x 70
    Leeds 117 x 76
    Leicester 110 x 76
    Middlesbro 115 x 75
    Millwall 105 x 68
    Norwich 114 x 74
    Notts For 115 x78
    Portsmouth 115 x 73
    Preston 110 x 77
    Reading 102 x 70
    S****horpe 111 x 73
    Sheff Utd 112 x 72
    Swansea 105 x 68
    Watford 115 x 75

So showing that Leeds have the longest pitch whilst Hull and Notts For have the widest, does this mean their players are fitter?

And only one other team having the same size pitch as ours, Sheff Utd which we won there easily, not a coincidence surely?

Interesting to see that Coventry, Millwall and Swansea share such small pitch sizes though, does this mean they run out of steam before us, having trained for a smaller pitch.

Info taken from various sites but using Official ones whenever able.

those stats suprise me. I thought we would have 1 of the smallest pitches as I always think it feels very narrow.
I played sunday league football today.

Clearly I was the best player on the pitch.

I scored 5 and made 7 last ditch tackles.

We lost 5-0 but the rest of my team were sh it!

a wider pitch would mean a more expansive game, more side to side passing, good for 4-4-2....wingers can be right on the line and be one on one with FB's, a longer and narrower pitch would mean long balls and speed, knock on's, better for 4-3-3 and 4-3-1-2,
a longer and wider pitch would mean everybody gets knackered. Arsenal use to play a very tight game during Graham's time, they would also defend high up, squeezing play, opponents had little space, Wenger wants more space so that his guys can play and pass.

Hi Mark, I don't think the pitch sizes are constantly updated as there wouldn't be much need to. BUT Notts F width was deliberately narrrowed by Billy Davies to help his own team for what reason I can't remember now. 78 yds wide is equivalent to 13 of those big squares you sometimes see on the pitch, 6 x 6 sq yds. If you ever see their pitch width you'll notice there's plenty of grass area running down the bylkine.

Thank you for that lesson in maths Steve, am i really that thick.

Here is your lesson in English, bye line, does not have a 'k' and is two different words as in 'cross from the bye line' although most people tend to call it the 'touchline' all one word.

The point of mentioning the 6 x 6 pitch squares was a general one for all readers, which I also do from time to time, is of counting them when applicable, to working out pitch widths of various clubs.

I do this because of the tv pundits who are rediculously stupid when talking about pitch widths, because they see a huge amount of spare area around the pitch and just jump to the conclusion that the pitch must be a massive width too. and in most cases they are completely wrong, stereo-type idiots.

These are the same idiots that didn't notice the world cup ball was a complete disaster in terms of playability.
