A travel card covers all train services in London mate plus all buses and tubes

Not sure why you would want to get off at East Croydon though

Normally jump off at Selhurst as use the Railway Social Club which is next door and about 15 minutes walk to the ground but Thornton Heath is a bit nearer I believe

Thornton Heath, Norwood Junction and Selhurst are all Zone 4, East Croydon is Zone 5.
So you'll be covered either way.

Anyone know if you can buy tickets on the gate or would that be pushing it?

Should think so, haven't heard anything about them not selling on the day, won't be cheap though, tickets in advance from the BO are £30.

Can thoroughly recomend getting v.fast train to E.Croydon and then jumping a "chugger" back to Selhurst or Norwood Jnc (whichever comes in first). Loads of trains just whizz to E Croydon from Victoria or London Bridge after just stopping at Clapham Jnc.
