  • Mirroring 2009? Even better than that!

I've read people saying that we've only got points against the weaker opposition so far but how are we doing in comparison to 2009 against these opposition?

    2009/10
Barnsley at HOME - Won 5-2
Sheffield United AWAY - Drew 1-1
Scunthorpe at HOME - Lost 0-1
Derby County AWAY - Won 2-4

    P4, W2, D1, L1, F10, A6, GD+4, PTS 7/12

    2010/11
Barnsley at HOME - Won 4-0
Sheffield United AWAY - Won 0-3
Scunthorpe at HOME - Won 2-0
Derby County AWAY - Drew 2-2

    P4, W3, D1, L0, F11, A2, GD+9, PTS 10/12

Most importantly our points difference is 3 better than last season plus we've scored 1 extra goal, conceded 4 fewer thus meaning a much better goal difference, which included 3 clean sheets compared to zero against the same opposition.

After 4 matches last season WBA and Newcastle had won three and drawn one so they too had 10 points as had Birmingham and Wolves in 08/09.

If you further compare our record this season with Newcastle's record last season and against the same opposition we are a point ahead having gained a pointed a Pride Park whereas Newcastle lost 3-0. They too beat the other three teams. As for WBA, well they too drew at Pride Park 2-2 but they failed to beat Barnsley at home (drew 1-1), they also failed to beat Sheffield United at Bramall Lane (2-2 draw) meaning that against the same oppositon at the same venues they achieved just 6 points out of a possible 12.

Think we have some games coming up that are winnable when last season you would have expected a loss.

    Boro and Leicester for example.

Both struggling and are ripe for picking.

The season Hull went up they had 5 pts from 5 games a this stage of season. There's a long way to go and likes of Boro or Leicester have plenty of time to creep up table. However, I'd always rather have points in the bag and momentum. We've had a great start and without being cliched I think we should take it game by game/month by month. Winning say, 3 games per month is an achievable target that'd get us to 80 pts+ and means we don't necesarily have to panic if/when we lose or draw a couple.

I remember this time last season people were saying "dont panic, the table doesnt matter much until xmas". I never agreed with that, would much rather take the position we're in now and accumulate as many points as early as possible.

We tend to lose points against the weaker sides, so the fact that we are where we are after playing these teams is good.
We often do better against the top 6 anyway.

Good stats Sir Pie. I wish we could play Pompey or Palace next week - they might as well hand the points over before the match the way they are playing.

I think now is a great time to be playing Boro and Leicester. Both are in shocking form. And Forest are truly awful. And these are teams that you would have expected to be up there among the top 6.

Newcastle's results in 09/10 against our next 4 opponents:

Middlesbrough at HOME - WON 2-0
Ipswich Town AWAY - WON 4-0
Leicester City AWAY - DREW 0-0
Doncaster Rovers HOME - WON 2-1

So Newcastle achieved 9 points from their matches against the opponents we faced in our opening 4 matches and a further 10 points from their next 4 leaving them with 19 points from these 8 matches.

West Brom's results in 09/10 against our next 4 opponents:

Middlesbrough at HOME - WON 2-0
Ipswich Town AWAY - DREW 1-1
Leicester City AWAY - WON 2-1
Doncaster Rovers HOME - WON 3-1

So like Newcastle, WBA achieved 9 points from the second set of matches to go with the 6 from the first set.

These matches were of course not their actual first 8 matches but they give a good indication as to what points target we should be on against the same opposition the two automatically promoted teams from last year achieved.

As for actual points from the first 8 matches - Newcastle won 6, lost 1 and drew 1 which equals 19 points and WBA won 6 matches and drew 2 meaning they were on 20 points after 8 matches.

Maybe its just me but I think our next 4 matches are far stiffer opposition than the first 4. I now feel Leicester away is now winnable as is Boro and Donny at Home, I think Ipswich will be our first defeat of the season.

To answer another question on another thread but I'll do it here I think Ipswich are gonna be our main rivals this season if we push for the Automatics, I think Roy Keane will get it together up there this season.
