  • Wikipedia is WRONG regarding Varney

Varney's record last season was not 11 in 43 it was in fact 9 in 40. Doesn't seem a lot of difference and I'm not writing this to knock the player but it highlights two things. Firstly as we all know anyone can update his record so wikipedia shouldn't be trusted as a credible source and secondly his record for last season unfortunately wasn't as good as some might have first thought.

However, although 9 in 40 on paper looks like a goal every 4½ games it doesn't highlight how much (or little he did play). Of the 40 matches he appeared in he played a little under 80% (2849 mins out of a possible 3600) and score a goal every 317 minutes during this time so in fact he scored a goal every 3½ games. Still more goals than Agyemang, Mackie and Clarke scored last season plus he contributed with 6 assists.

Varney's goal scoring rate last season was better than the following players:

    Ben Burgess
    Gary Taylor-Fletcher
    Nile Ranger
    Craig Mackail-Smith
    Marcus Tudgay
    Leon Best
    Aaron McLean
    Alan Lee
    Ched Evans
    Jonathan Walters
    Ross McCormack
    Tamas Priskin
    Paul Gallagher

    And many many more.

All that and he was playing for a side who were relegated to League One.

I guess it comes from stories like this:

Season-long loan deal edges closer for striker Varney
          Thursday, August 26, 2010, 08:30
DERBY County say they are "very close" to agreeing a deal for striker Luke Varney to go out on a season-long loan.

Queens Park Rangers and Varney's old club, Charlton Athletic, are interested in the 27-year-old but other clubs are also keen.

"It's getting very close to a deal being done. It will probably be a season-long loan with a view to a permanent move. There are just a few loose ends to tie up," said Rams boss Nigel Clough.

Varney was left out of the squad for the game against Coventry City last Saturday because of transfer talks.

"Given our luck with injuries, we just didn't think it was worth the risk playing Luke. In a different situation, we would certainly have considered playing him," said Clough.

Varney, whose contract runs to 2012, spent virtually all of last season on loan with Sheffield Wednesday and his appearance in the recent defeat by Cardiff City was his first for the Rams in a year.

His departure would free up space for Clough to bring in a new face or two because the player is one of the top earners at Derby.

"Yes, he is, but that is not Luke's fault," said Clough.

"He has not been one ounce of trouble since we came. He has tried his socks off and has not had the best of times. But, yes, there are other considerations."

Varney joined on loan from Charlton in November 2008 and permanently in January 2009, a few days before Clough became manager.

Ffs why do so many people rely on Wikipedia, there are a load of mistakes, it's all entered by the public, i could go on there and put that we won the world cup this year, doesn't mean it's true does it.

32 starts and 9 subtitute appearances including 1 in the Carling Cup, which I didn't include meaning 32 + 8 = 40 appearances and in those 40 appearances he scored 9 goals at a rate of a goal every 317 minutes.
