Varney's record last season was not 11 in 43 it was in fact 9 in 40. Doesn't seem a lot of difference and I'm not writing this to knock the player but it highlights two things. Firstly as we all know anyone can update his record so wikipedia shouldn't be trusted as a credible source and secondly his record for last season unfortunately wasn't as good as some might have first thought.
However, although 9 in 40 on paper looks like a goal every 4½ games it doesn't highlight how much (or little he did play). Of the 40 matches he appeared in he played a little under 80% (2849 mins out of a possible 3600) and score a goal every 317 minutes during this time so in fact he scored a goal every 3½ games. Still more goals than Agyemang, Mackie and Clarke scored last season plus he contributed with 6 assists.
Varney's goal scoring rate last season was better than the following players:
Ben Burgess
Gary Taylor-Fletcher
Nile Ranger
Craig Mackail-Smith
Marcus Tudgay
Leon Best
Aaron McLean
Alan Lee
Ched Evans
Jonathan Walters
Ross McCormack
Tamas Priskin
Paul Gallagher
And many many more.
All that and he was playing for a side who were relegated to League One.
