It's all about options and unity. You can't have lots of genuine first team strikers on the bench. Varney and Clarke, having played for relegated sides last season are more likely to expect not to start but fight for a place. Whereas if you sign Roberts, Kitson and have Helguson they'd all expect to start and then you have problems trying to keep them all happy. As the likes of Blackpool, Burnley and Hull have shown in recent years you can't go far wrong with having unity. Varney, like Clarke, will do a job in the same way that Taylor-Fletcher and Burgess did for Blackpool. They won't score everytime they place but they always won't throw their toys out of the pram if not selected.
