As a recent graduate from a "mickey mouse degree" (Sports Devleopment and Coaching Sciences) I can safely say that I would be in a worse off position than I would be had I not gone to Uni.

You'd be suprised at how many fairly low level jobs that I'm looking at at the moment (£17kpa average), of completely different varieties require the applicant to be "educated to degree standard". No mention of a specification, simply that they have had the training in research, IT and the extra 4 years worth of academia to show that they are committed to their career and can learn new skills.

"Id sooner my tax money be wasted on uni students than the **** that lives here and never make any attempt to work and are nothing more than parasites on our system" - This is the most pertinent post on this thread.

Oh and Facto seems like a complete "white van man" wind up merchant. Love it
You need to be taking into consideration the recession as well, rates have come down in my sector 30/40 % at present alone from their peak. At present on average for each graduate job advertised there are 70 applicants, these are difficult times and this recession will continue to bite long and hard for a couple more years IMO. Most important thing at this stage for you is to get your foot through the door, I was fortunate to graduate during the boom years, times have changed unfortunately

What a lot of people like Facto seem to forget as well is a lot of graduates end up on low paid jobs at least for the first few years on a salary, its just the way it goes. Another thing that grinds my axe a little bit is this generation who have benefited from the property boom and use it as a measure of their own success when the reality of it is it was more a case of right place right time.

I have no doubt we have a bettered educated society than what we did 20 years ago and that can only be a good thing.

Yeah and also what about nurses and doctors? Kind of crucial, do a fantastic job working all hours dealing with all sorts and they've all been to uni!

Some good points w12. Graduating last year and this is tough I imagine. Most jobs will ask for experience too but how you supposed to get experience when no one gives you any!

Believe me you will find this to be true no matter what degree you have, i used to interview people for a computer co. and once had this guy come to me with a degree in Computer Science for a job as only an operator, i employed him and he lasted less than a month due to the fact that he thought he knew everything, he was not popular with the other members of staff who all knew a lot more than him, showing that experience won, over time spent doing a degree.
No doubt this chap has gone on to higher things but it is an attitude i found a lot of prospective employees with degrees have.

Good luck with your degree and job search after, but remember although you will have a degree there will be people with many years of experience, which in my and many employers eyes is much more important.

Thanks for the advice mate but graduated 8 years ago! Not that we're recruiting now but I have tended to recruit graduates but that doesn't mean to say I wouldn't recruit a school leaver, just depends on candidate.

I don't need an education on what degrees are worth the paper they are written on and what are not as I already know the answers to all those questions.

As for having a trade means it means sod all to me as I have spent my career to date managing sites and tradesman and I can assure you no tradesman has been on higher rates of pay than me other than my first 2 month contract. If a graduate is incapable of utilising their degree then that is down to the individual not the qualification. There is no such thing as a Mickey Mouse degree, all degrees are of a set academic level, students know what they get into when they embark on degree programme and the type of work available and rates of pay there after. If I wanted to become a tradesman then I could of like many, its a honest living and the pay is all right but a trade would not offer me no where near the same level of opportunities in life as my degree does.
