Well he definately earns a nice wedge if he has a tax bill of 32k, so good luck to him he's on more than me, i should have gone to uni it seems where i thought working was the way to go back in the day.

w12 I agree that some that go to uni can make a success of things.

What Facto is saying is also true.

To many people are coming out with a mickey mouse degree, (leisure and tourism) and then they end up on the doll because there is no job at the end of it.

Also regarding a trade that you went against me on.

I am a qualified electrician and I earn more money than all my mates that went to uni. That includes 1 who has a masters in engineering. I also have a job for life and I can live a comfortable life style. I was in engineering before that which is a dying industry.

My mate that spent 5 years at uni is stuffed because he is in the wrong trade.

I think you need to think before coming out with a negative response.

Facto is being quite harsh but he certainly has a point that I think many would agree with who aren't so biased.

I don't need an education on what degrees are worth the paper they are written on and what are not as I already know the answers to all those questions.

As for having a trade means it means sod all to me as I have spent my career to date managing sites and tradesman and I can assure you no tradesman has been on higher rates of pay than me other than my first 2 month contract. If a graduate is incapable of utilising their degree then that is down to the individual not the qualification. There is no such thing as a Mickey Mouse degree, all degrees are of a set academic level, students know what they get into when they embark on degree programme and the type of work available and rates of pay there after. If I wanted to become a tradesman then I could of like many, its a honest living and the pay is all right but a trade would not offer me no where near the same level of opportunities in life as my degree does.

Just waiting for some plank to drop the cliched "University of Life* line

Oh without a doubt mate, hidden behind a bit of **** taking and a few emoticons sits a man who never got what they quite wanted out of life. I see it all the time on site, operatives with the same attitude of the same ilk.

If you have to make yourself feel big by trying to belittle those of a better education than yourself then crack on.

It does make me laugh when I hear this sort of talk though because when I'm on site those who give it large when your back is turned soon remember the pecking order and heirachy in your presence and I'm sure you know exactly what I'm talking about.

Great topic, One that every student/non-student will have till the end of time.

As a recent graduate from a "mickey mouse degree" (Sports Devleopment and Coaching Sciences) I can safely say that I would be in a worse off position than I would be had I not gone to Uni.

You'd be suprised at how many fairly low level jobs that I'm looking at at the moment (£17kpa average), of completely different varieties require the applicant to be "educated to degree standard". No mention of a specification, simply that they have had the training in research, IT and the extra 4 years worth of academia to show that they are committed to their career and can learn new skills.

Students end up with loads of debt nowadays. By far the majority will pay this debt off and contribute to society. Can't see what's wrong with that? In terms of where each pound of your tax goes, I'd be more concerned about those that claim benefits when they're perfectly able to work.

Agree and I don't have any issue's with students, plenty of scu m that breed like rabbits and cost the tax payers millions.
