  • Why do clubs bother with youth teams?

I'm genuinely interested. The cost of this must be a million plus a year. Now money isn't as much of a problem for us it's not a big deal, but why do financially damaged clubs bother?

Some may argue that we have done well with Sterling and Parrett, but we got 3 million for them, which probably only covers the last 3 years of the youth system.

I think it is totally counter productive and instead we should spend that money trying to nick Arsenal and Chelsea's youth players who have no chance of making it in their respective teams.

Last night showed how inept and lightweight our youth team are. None of them would make it into league 2 standard let alone the championship so what's the point?

Oh and on a slightly seperate note I am incredibly angry that Ephraim is considered a 'professional'. He is cack and what he offers in the occasional good cross, (his barnsley cross won't be replicated for another 3 months), and bland, obvious passes that Derry can do coupled with his weakness and fear of any tackle makes him an absolute joke. If I was an opposing player I'd laugh at him.

Right my boy was at sarfend and they take all the lads released by the London sides. They then in turn released all but 2 of thier u18s squad who were all very good.I really dont know why a lot of teams bother either. When mine went to Sarfend after trialling for Col u he got told some pretty shocking figures about how mank kids are at clubs and the minute ammount who make a living out of fb.My son has mates who play for CFC,Norwich, sarfend,Col U ,Ipswich and the captain of Arsenal u14s and all apart from the last 2 most say they dont think they will make it and just living it for the moment.

Exactly. I've got 2 mates who used to play for Reading and Fulham. The one who was at Reading was released, then went to afc wimbledon, then 2 years later he's now at Banstead. The Fulham one is still there, but he's 18 and he's not even playing reserve football. I wouldn't be surprised if he joined someone like Leyton Orient and then dropped out of football alltogether.

Surely the cost of running a youth team is extortionate?
