Having posted last week to ask some advice on taking my 3 year old to his first match, I thought I would let you all know how we got on....
We left home in Northampton at 12.30 and arrived just after 2pm. Ben watched his DVD's in the car on the journey and I promised him we would find a playground to go to before the game....which we did. Got into the ground at 2.45pm and took our seats in X block. Ben was very much taken with Sparks our mascot and kept pointing to him as he walked round the pitch.
After a brief picnic of sausage roll and cake, the game kicked off. Ben seemed to spend most of the time watching the big screen rather than the game itself, but he was taken in by the whole affair. He loved it when HH slotted home for the first goal. I think the fact that everyone else was jumping up and down made him do the same, but he was joining in with all the clapping throughout the first half.
Half time meant a trip to the loo and drinks for the two of us. A lolly pop kept hime quiet for a good deal of the second half, and the bag of tricks I had brough with me kept him entertained. He didn't really watch any of the second half to be honest but there was no crying, whinging, or fidgeting at all throughout the entire match.
We left on 85 mins to beat the crowd out and I think Ben was ready to go by that time. The best bit for me though was on the way back to the car. Ben stopped to pick up a leaf to carry back, which he does all the time, and a Barnsley fan in his 50's who walking back to his coach with his wife, saw Ben do this and said "its got dog s**t on it". I was just about to say something about swearing in front of my boy, when Ben just looked up, not at the man though, and just said "QPR won 4 - 0". It was priceless, although I am not sure he meant it in the way it came out. We moved swiftly on and got home at 6.30pm.
What a fantastic day. So to sum up, Ben enjoyed the day out with his daddy, but he didn't really watch much of the game.
You Rsssssssssssssssss
