I cannot for the life of me understand why as soon as there may be a problem, why many people assume that it is our club that is at fault.

Clubs agreed a fee and a deal early on - AT wanted to keep his options open and try to find a decent club in Spain and France that were willing to match his expectations. As predicted, that hasn't transpired and his options are narrowing with the season coming up very quickly.
2 year deal suits him as it essentially means he has limited value in 12 months time and is then again free to negotiate with continental sides in 18 months on a Bosman. IMO £1m is too much to pay for a two year deal in the current climate as that money is very unlikely to see a return.
He'll sign - I don't think there's anything else out there for him and find it all a bit sad that we're bending over backwards for a player who has made it clear we are some way down his pecking order. Surely the funds used to chase Taarabt would have been better invested in a Clinton Morrison, Robert Earnshaw, Jon Stead or Andrew Surman...
IMO

If and when he signs, i'm sure he will do good job for us,and i hope he does come. But it does make you wonder, as Nodge has pointed out, could the money have been better used, in hindsight ?
