I think you need pace if you haven't got protection from midfield. This season with Derry in front of the back 4, Rowlands now available and Faurlin more established and settled we should have a consistent midfield who will protect the back 4. England suffered in the WC because Barry wasn't fit and nobody else helped out. Puyol and Pique aren't particularly quick but they had protection.

wonder if rowlands could ever move back a position as he gets older and slightly less mobile. cos we all know he can get right stuck in.

Central defenders dont need pace if they are well protected as sirpie said.

I much prefer CDs to have positional sense, timing and a good reading of the game which were not Damos great attributes....

Was getting rid of Stewart a mistake - Yes
                Under Les Ferdinand:
Luke Freeman, top assists in the league: 4million
Alex Smithies, great goalie for this club: 3,5million
Charlie Austin, 19 Premier League goals: 4million
Jack Robinson: Contract ran out, left for free
                And many more mistakes

LES FERDINAND, IT'S TIME TO GO

BS - Football is a team game and good teams defend as teams and attack as teams, If you don't have pace up front other teams can defend a high line and your midfield has no space to play in gets pressed easily resulting in hoofs to no one in particular in the channels. If your defence has no pace they will tend to (and doubly so if Hall is playing) stand of 10 20 yards deeper. Even with one sitting you are not going to expose your full backs to one on ones so your midfield when defending will sit deeper, this will leave your forwards isolated and when you receive the ball, you will have to play a longer game and hope they can hold it long enough to give the midifeld time to get forward. At championship level or higher the double whammy of no pace at the back and no pace up front is going to see you in a relegation fight and I for one with the current squad and its lack of pace really fear this at the moment.
