This Squad of 25 Rule - MERGED THREAD

Surely this new rule will mean there will be a number of teams (Man City and United, Spurs, Sunderland, Wolves, Bolton, Newcastle, WBA, Everton and Liverpool all have squads with more than 28 players) will have to let players leave on temporary loans to get 1st team football. As the link suggests the likes of Woodgate may not be selected in Spurs' 25 man squad meaning that he will play no first team football until January. With Man City's squad growing all the time there looks likely to be plenty of decent talent unable to play. The teams don't have to select their squads until August 31st and then can effectively pick 25, 22+year olds and use under 21s when they want to but currently Man City have 31 players in there squad who are 22 or older meaning that at least 6 will have to find first team elsewhere. Have I understood this rule rightly and could this mean that there will be some good players available even after the transfer window has closed?

i fear we are banking on this rule.. i hope we sign 2 strikers before then. i wouldnt like to believe we would leave it til after sept to get in a striker on loan.

For anyone that does not know, by September 1st premiership clubs cannot have more than 25 men squads for the first four months of the season (well until Janauary)

'Home grown' also also includes foreigners that have been registered with an English or Welsh club for 3 years between 16 and 21 years old.

Fabregas classes as 'home grown',as will alot of Arsenal's foreign youngsters.

this is where problems for Man City begin. I think they have a squad of 35 or something

they'll have to keep players like steven ireland, bridge and swp to keep there 'homegrown' players, they wanted to get rid

From the start of the 2010/2011 season all teams will have to register a squad of 25 players, with at least 8 ‘home grown’ players registered. A ‘home-grown’ player is one who has spent three years between the ages of 16-21 registered at a club in England and Wales, This incidentally means that Owen Hargreaves, capped 42 times for England, is not by this definition a ‘home-grown’ player. Clubs can then supplement this squad with a B list of unlimited players under the age of 21.

Meaning that althought the likes of Ireland, SWP etc will count as homegrown there are only places for 17 non-home grown. Man City's current squad is:

They currently have 17 non-home grown which is the maximum but 14 home grown which means they either have to not selected from the home grown group or not select from the non-home grown group meaning that some good players will have to find first team football elsewhere.
