Sensible Debate On Sporting Directors/Player Buys

I take the point that having sporting directors divides opinion. Many premiership club do not have one, but most in Italy/Spain do.

I go back to my original point, I think it comes down to the manager. If proven, have no problem with them picking the players, but the continental way is to target a player, then let the manager work with them.

Barcelona are an example of this.

As for the criteria, I suspect being a football agent for a number of years, would help enormously in a sporting director role. Whoever it might be and if you take the personal stuff away, think we have a good one.

How can being a football agent mean you are any better than picking a good player than you or I?

Yes, we maybe able to identify a good player, but would we be able to know about clauses in contracts, like say Gorkss or Buzsacky?

Pete all he knows is how to get an agent a good payday, that is not enough for me to have him as our sporting director yes he knows about clauses but its the player I want him to know about, the club have lawyers to sort the clauses and money side out.

well if your honest pete is was our love of gianni that brought us together as posters in the first place
yes we both love him...but look at that time after the southampton game we were in a pub with him

are just a few. For every Buzsacky you might get a Borrowdale, but on the whole in the last 18 months when we've actually had the money, the buys have been good. Some forget, that when you talk about buys like Sturridge, Moore, Ukah, Oliseh, Czerkas we never had a pot to p.iss in based on the previous "pocket the money chairman and directors" who bled this club dry.

Osborn could have been a decent player Pete. Wilkins refused to pick him as it jeopordised his own place in the team!

Ruddock was only on loan and you can argue that he saved us from relegation that season. He was, in truth, superb for those 8 or so games
