Warnock brings his QPR squad to Tavistock
Neil Warnock returns to the Westcountry when he brings his Queen's Park Rangers squad to Langsford Park for a friendly against Carlsberg South West Peninsula League team Tavistock tonight (7pm).
The match is the first of three in the region this week for the npower Championship outfit. QPR are also playing Bodmin Town at Priory Park on Wednesday (7.30pm) and Torquay United at Plainmoor on Friday (7.30pm).
It is very familiar territory for Warnock. The former Plymouth Argyle boss has a home in south-east Cornwall, and he has brought every team he has managed to the Westcountry for pre-season tours in recent years.
Carlsberg South West Peninsula club Tavistock are looking forward to playing Warnock and his Championship side in their first pre-season match. New Lambs chairman Bernard Harding delighted his first official task for his club is such a prestigious one, as Warnock has guaranteed to field his full first team squad for the game.
Warnock, who led Argyle to promotion from the Football League's bottom division in 1996, will be bringing some more recent Home Park old boys on tour with him. Hungary international midfielder Akos Buzsaky is a key man in the Hoops' squad, while striker Jamie Mackie made the journey from Plymouth to west London this summer.
Former Argyle loan signing Leon Clarke has also joined QPR this summer. Warnock has been impressed by both of his new strikers in training.
"Jamie Mackie and Leon Clarke have been superb," the Hoops' manager declared. "They've been working very closely in training, and that's a great sign already."
Warnock is looking forward to his Westcountry travels this week. He told his club's website: "There's always a great friendly atmosphere around the grounds. It's fantastic – it's like a pre-season party.
"The facilities are great down there. It's a neglected part of the football world, if you ask me. The people always really appreciate clubs like QPR coming down – I've even been asked to do the official opening of the new changing rooms at Tavistock."
Tickets for tonight's match at Tavistock are priced at £8 for adults to stand, or £12 to sit in the grandstand. Students and OAPs will pay £5.
Tavistock's squad tonight is expected to include former Argyle defender Ryan Cross plus another experienced new signing who also had a spell with the Pilgrims, midfielder Martyn Sullivan.
