  • Graham Taylor = spot on

We won the World Cup in 1966 but since then we have learned nothing from victory. All of the other countries we see them coming on and see how they play and they are miles ahead of us at international level.

I look at the centre at Burton and the things we should put in place to ensure the international team is a priority and to develop players and these are so, so important. I would say we have lost our way, but it's not as though we have ever had it.

The authority of the Football Association has almost totally gone and it is a club situation we are looking at now. I learned from the failure I had as England manager that if we keep trying to play 4-4-2 we are never going to win the World Cup.

You need the FA to reassert its authority because they are in charge of the international team. As we have gone on since the formation of the Premier League the power of the FA has gone away more and more. The club power within our game is much higher. [FA Director of Football Development] Trevor Brooking has come up with some good ideas but he has no chance.

also this is a must read article, this bit in particular is shocking:

According to European football's governing body Uefa, Spain had almost 15,000 Uefa A and Pro Licence coaches in 2008 - more than double the number of any other European nation. And that is despite it taking 750 study hours to acquire a Pro Licence in Spain, compared with just 245 in England.

Some very good points here. Agree with Taylor entirely and the stat about the coahces is shocking but also strangely predictable...

Taylor was a poor England manager but a fantastic manager of clubs who performed above their means.

Very soon even Norway will rise above your level if something doesnt happen on your club level.Because as you know neither Arshavin nor Drogba are playing for the three lions. ......

With gascoigne injured taylor had nowhere near the talent available to him of managers before and after. Let's not kid ourselves with the 'foreign players make them look good line'. Our players are good, it's the managers fault for not getting them to play as a team. Rooney was the star player for man u. Gerrard with tores is key for liverpool. I don't see how terry and ashley cole are helped out by playing with foreign players. Lampard's goal scoring record froom midfield is fantastic. We do have the players. England will however not be as technical as likes of spain. Our success is built on strong back 4 and a defensive midfielder to protect them. Hargreaves and ferdinand are huge losses yet under capello our defence always looked weak. Upson as an international player, do me a favour!
