  • England the bottom line problem

We shouldn't have a foreign manager that can't speak a word of English.

Compare Capello and the lacklustre display against USA and Algeria with Holloway and his Blackpool boys passion this season. A foreign manager with undoubted managerial talent at the top level vs a man motivator with far less tactical skill (arguably). The clear difference is the way Capello's lack of English means it is impossible for him to create a real relationship with his side. Add in that most the England players are a bunch of big time charlie ******s & it proves you need someone English and with Holloways motivational skills to bring the best out of them.

Because the likes of Graham Taylor, Kevin Keegan and Glenn Hoddle were much better were they?

Don't remember Hiddink being able to speak much Korean but he took them to a WC semi final.

Glenn Hoddle was the last good Manager the England team have had.

He has an obvious list of black marks against him
      1. Scandlous religious views against the disabled.
      2. Eileen's wonder hands
      3. Dropping Gazza
      4. Not practicising penalties and allowing Batty to take one.
      5. Diamond Lights

Tactically his approach was refreshing and I think the players respected him as he knew how to play the game.

I'd take him back in a heartbeat
I need some time in the sunshine, I gotta slow it right down.

No, we shouldn't have so many overseas players in our leagues.
It stops the England youngsters progressing.
This country has always put clubs before country and if it continues we will always fail at international level.
It's why i don't bother to watch us anymore.

Funny that you use the word 'bottom' in the title for this thread , because that is where England are at the moment and 'rock' at that.

The English managers above managed in different times with, in my opinion, a lesser bunch of players. On paper we have individuals who under a man motivator are capable of winning the world cup. I personally don't think we have had that possibility since 66.

I recommend reading a book titled "Why England lose". It gives a good insight from a fair and balanced point of view. It doesn't share my view on a man motivating manager, although it doesn't contradict it either, but makes 2 very good points both of which are backed up.

              1) Football, particularly since the late 70's and 80's has become a working mans game. To such a degree that anyone who isn't working class has taken to Rugby or Cricket. Therefore we have missed out on a massive % of talent, perhaps this explains why we won the WC in 66 (when all classes participated) but not since...who knows?

              2) It compares results of today vs population/historic results/countries wealth. The result is that England actually slightly OVER achieves, even though we all moan that we should do better....

Anyway, I digress. Capello is and has never been the answer since the first time he opened his mouth and spoke as much English as I speak Portugese.

Oh and SPC. Korean players play with pride so wouldn't have needed man motivational skills of a top class coach to get them fired up. It's obvious for all to see that our lot have no PRIDE, PASSION or FIGHT without such a man in the dressing room and on the touchline!

I don't think the language thing is a factor at all. Fabio's English really is not that bad and besides, how many other team's, international and domestic have been succesful with overseas managers?

In my opinion the real problem is that England's international set up hs become a complete circus. Just look at the last game, we had David Beckham sat suited and booted on the bench and Prince's William and Harry in the dressing room after the game..........what is all that about?!!!!!

We have created a total media circus where these overpaid, prima donna players are made to feel like celebrities rather than a squad of 23 men out in South Africa to do what they are paid to do and win games of football.

English international football needs to get back to grass roots. The players need to be put in a environment where they are sheilded from the intense media interest and other distractions!

It's not just the language though. Its the English comradary, the jokes, the banter, coming from a similar background, the whole English connection that is missing.

manager's nationality is nothing to do with the problem.

The problem is how we treach our kids football.

Why do we use full size footballs? Why do we let *****ic parents scream at the touchline and pressure kids to win.

I used to live in spain - every child there plays with a small ball that does not bounce - same one they use in brazil, argentina etc. They would not dream of letting kids play with a full size ball. They teach skill, not brute force.

We have no strength in depth and haven't for 40 years. When will we learn?

                          Utter rubbish.

                          1) football has become a middle class game more than ever. More people are interested in football than ever before. The reason less are playing is because kids are not allowed out anymore and sit at home on their xbox. The opposite is true in spain (I used to live there) where evrey kid in town is out all night plating football.

                          2) popultaion is irrelevant once you have over a few million. Hollland has a tiny population compared to ours. India and china have massive population and football is the most popular sport in China. Germany and Italy have relatively close population to us and are far more successful.

I stopped caring when we hired an italian manager. Will be delighted if we lose to Slovenia

Read the book and you'll see what I'm saying, its all backed up by fact.

Please define a "few" million as well....Also please read the rest of that paragraph which mentions history, wealth also plays a big part and last time I checked India and China weren't on the Mittal rich list!
