Ambrose and Kenny today would be nice. But we still need a 20 goal a season striker.

WBA walked promotion last season with Dorrans as their top scorer in the league.
        A midfielder, with 13 goals.

Agree, everyone would like a 20 goal striker, but you don't need one.

True, but they had a better strike force than Clarke and Mackie.

We need some good strikers for sure

I refer the right honourable gentlemen the comments I made a few weeks ago...

            Highest scorers 2009/10
            Newcastle 90 goals
            WBA 89 goals
            Blackpool 74 goals
            Cardiff 73 goals
            Reading 68 goals

Top scorers in each of those teams:
Kevin Nolan (Midfielder) and Andy Carroll (Striker) – 17 goals
Chris Brunt (Midfielder) and Graham Dorrans (Midfielder) – 13 goals
Charlie Adam (Midfielder) – 18 goals
Peter Whittingham (Midfielder) – 22 goals
Gylfi Sigurdsson (Midfielder) – 17 goals

None of the three promoted had a 20 goal scorer. All three teams had midfielders as their highest scorers except for Carroll who was 3 short of the 20 mark.

I think I am right in saying that Nolan, Brunt, Adam, Whittingham and Sigurdsson take penalties and freekicks for their respective clubs.

Swansea scored 40 goals in total last season and if they had scored an 41st, in any one of the 18 games they drew, they would have been in the play-off's.

True, but every team there had better stikeforces than Mackie and Clarke. Bear in mind that for Cardiff Chopra also got 16 and Bothroyd 13.
All those sides had what I would call decent strikers. Even Blackpool had Campbell who was prolific.

Our problem for the last 5 or so years has been goals. To go up we will need to score and as a general trend the sides with good strikers go up. Mackie/Clarke/Helgusson wont score more than 20 goals between them imo and that will definatley NOT be enough for us to go up.

What WBA and Newcastle had, that we didn't, was a good target man for the attacking midfielders (Dorrans, Brunt, Nolan etc..) to work off.

You need someone to occupy the cenre backs, hold it up for the likes of Taarabt, Buzsaky, Mackie, and Ambrose(?) to get further up the pitch.

Look at Buzsaky's goal at Palace.
Priskin was a bit pony, but his part in that goal was the kind of thing I'm on about. Just won the ball in the box, showed a bit of strength, and laid it back for Buzsaky to have a crack.

We'd all like that "20 goal" striker, but there are other ways of getting goals and wins, as Newcastle, WBA etc.. proved.

Strange that a thread about Paddy Kenny has taken this angle, but there you go. (!)

True Goddard but WBA and Newcastle's target men still got a fair amount of goals. Carroll got 17 for example. The only target men we have are Clarke and Helguson who I think we all agree will be lucky to get 10 goals between them next season.
We still need that big man little man combination.

Henderson, Hulse etc.. Sharp, Hooper etc.

We don't have goalscoring midfielders like WBA and Newcastle had, Buzsaky was our top scorer from midfield with 10, but 6 of those were penalties.

We are a million miles away from a squad that can compete for a top 2 finish.

I agree that our strikeforce isn't great and I'm not trying to say that it is but sometimes a 20 goal striker is a good thing if your defence is solid and you have other players knocking them in but sometimes the focus is all on that player and others don't contribute or are told just to give it to the front man to score.

Bristol City and Scunny had a striker who scored a lot of goals but neither team did anything special. Before Warnock there was too much focus on giving the ball to Taraabt rather than playing as a team. I'd love us to sign Hooper or Maynard but not at the expense of players like Mackie and Buzsaky feeling that they can't shoot because we've got someone else to do that job.

You're completely unfair on Helguson. He is a good target man and I would estimate he'd score 10-14 goals himself, whilst also bringing in others to play.
