  • Keep The Faith - In Memory of 1975

Its just turned into June and yet there are those demanding wee signthis player or that player. Thinking that one individual will be the key.

It got me thinking back to our great team of 1975/76. How many big signings were in that team?

    Phil Parkes? -England Cap
    Ian Gillard? - England Caps
    Dave Clement? - England Caps
    Dave Thomas? - England Caps
Frank McLintock - Arsenal Captain and the end of playing years?
Don Mason? A no-body from Notts County?

How many big signings were in that team? But they played great football as a team thanks to the initial Gordon Jago but mainly due to the inspiration, skill and people mangement of Dave Sexton, who got them playing such sweet football.

My point is that Football is a team sport and in this day and age its a squad game. The making of any great team is to get the right balance of skill, personalty, passion and energy.

Lets let Neil be our manager, build the squad he wants without picking over the signings. Theres no doubt that in recent years we have had some great individuals playing but its infrequently that the team has been strong as a collective playing highly attractive football (exceptions are at times under De Canio & Magilton) and I dont think anyone can really say there was an unbroken period of quality results/football (Holloways Team first year back in the championship played out of their skin in my opinion for the first part of the year.

Lets stay behind our Manager and leave him to assemble the Squad in wants.

Stan Bowles and, in particular, Dave Thomas were big big signings. In 1972, Stan cost £110,000 from Carlisle. Already known as a supremely talented player but wayward. Equivalent nowadays would be signing someone "like" Fabian Delph for £3 million

Thomas was wanted by a number of bigger clubs (Everton, Liverpool and Man City were all in for him at the time) and signed for us for £200,000. That is probably now akin to us signing the best player in the Championship for £6 million.

The McLintock signing would be similar to us signing Sol Campbell.

    These were big news deals.
